    Welcome to the forum Karen.
I’d say the frame condition is the biggest issue with these trucks.
Maintenance records are nice to see.

    Welcome!

As others have stated, frame rust is the biggest issue to look out for.

Pay a trusted independent mechanic for a pre purchase inspection, incuding a compression and leakdown test. And a proper frame inspection as others suggest.

This is excellent advice. If it's not an option for some reason, here are some steps I take when purchasing a used vehicle - nothing Tacoma specific though:

    • Start it cold. A lot of issues 'go away' once warmed up. Small exhaust leaks, burning oil, bearing noise, etc...
    • Test all the electronics. Windows, Stereo, HVAC, locks, mirrors, etc..
    • With the owner's permission, drive it a little hard. Go through the gears at WOT, test for steering play, slam the brakes - test that ABS.
    • Plug in a scanner. They're pretty affordable now. Check emissions readings, see if anything was reset. If so, why?
    • Check the fluids for discoloration and odor.
    • Probably the most obvious, crawl underneath and take a look for leaks, rust, damage, abuse, worn parts, etc.. if they say a part was recently replaced, it should look recently replaced.
    • Inspect all the common maintenance items, ball joints, bearings, belts, springs, shocks, tires, brakes, hoses, etc... If any are nearing the end of their life and you can replace, use it against the asking price.

But, like others have said, a trusted mechanic and history report goes a long way.

Hope that helps and good luck!

If it is a 4wd, make sure you test that out as well.
