2017-2018 TRD Pro Fox Shocks

so i need both front shocks replaced....they quoted me $404 each, installed.....so a total of $808 installed

I don't have the space to be doing the replacements myself, so I guess I'll be going through Toyota for now

 

No, Toyota retails them for that. Do you think their cost on the Pro grill is anywhere near the retail price?

The publicity is good for Fox. I am sure they cut a sweetheart deal with Toyota on a wholesale level but kept the MSRP high to prevent undercutting their other product lines.

 

This is my problem with Icon as well. They are a great product but need to be rebuilt fairly regularly. Bilsteins on the other hand carry a lifetime warranty.

 

but wouldn't the Bilstein warranty be for premature failure? not regular wear and tear?

Kind of like how all tires come with a warranty but if they wear down after 40k miles rather than the 50k they're warrantied to it's wear and tear, not a warranty issue?

 

Thanks for sharing. I was looking into buying a set of Fox Shocks to replace the Bilstein for the additional clearance but I guess I need to look into other options.

 

It might be different with Toyota but when I worked for VW we had to offer the customer the bad parts just as proof we changed them

 

got another one for you guys - should both the front set and rear set of shocks more or less wear out evenly?......meaning should I expect to have to throw down for the rear ones pretty soon too?

 

Are they covered under toyota warranty ? just curious because i got the extended when i got mine.

 

IMO any rebuildable shock is going to need service/rebuilt, probably around 40/50k miles. Really doesn’t matter the brand. Follow the the manufacturers recommendations.
Any mono tube shock is going to need replacement around the same time for best performance.

 

Personally I would do all four at the same time.

 

I don't think so, I've got the 125k too but I think they're a "wearable item" like brakes

 

You are going to have to read the fine print on the extended warranty. Normal wear will not be covered, but if they are leaking they may be covered.

Oh hey sorry, totally forgot about this. Turns out they weren’t leaking after all.....when I went back for the replacement, I asked the tech to show me so I could at least know what to look for. We jacked the truck up, took a look, turns out everything was fine. He said he wasn’t sure why the previous tech thought they were bad. So long story short, I didn’t need new shocks after all.

Do yourselves a favor and get a second opinion if you don’t know what you’re looking at. Don’t just take their word for it.

I have a suspicion that the tech thought they were leaking because of my Krown undercoating.....the crown is very clearly sprayed right into the shocks, and collects dust / dirt. I think the first tech thought it was oil from the shock leaking.

No harm, no foul.

Also, that quote I got for ~$400 per shock installed? Turns out that was for the OR Bilstein shocks, not the Pro Fox shocks. The Fox shocks aren’t under “parts” in the system, they’re under “aftermarket accessories” with the rest of the TRD things (filters and whatever)......my new quote? $1250 per shock, installed. Sounds more like it, but damn was I that close to replacing perfectly fine shocks and being out $2500

Some day I’ll get a lift in my garage. It’ll pay for itself the first time I get Fox to refurbish the shocks (looks like $185ea on their website)

 

If it comes time to replace mine and it'll cost $1250 per shock I might just throw LT on my pro

But I daily my truck now, and really like the ride as-is. I think once it gets in the 500k mile range I’ll semi-retire it and go LT / 285s / full bro haha

 

Mines a daily also. I think the only thing that'll change is I'll randomly drive over more things around town rather than just in the trails.
