help build my 2.7 hunting truck

i recently bought a 08 2.7 4x4 ex. cab tacoma, it seems like it needs a lil more power and better tires let me know what i should do for power and tires, as im sure yall know more about this stuff then i do. I would like the truck to have more power and stay moderately quiet not stock quiet but let me know its not stock quiet and not to loud scaring the hell out of the deer

 

First, putting down your budget to do upgrades would probably be helpful Some things like an AFE Cold Air Intake (CAI) would help some, also some exhaust helps open it up a bit more. If nothing else, a drop in K&N makes it 'seem' at least to have a little more power and less hesitation. At least by butt-dyno. Plus you don't have to buy filters anymore just wash and re-oil.

 

remove the secondary air filter and replace the stock filter with a good high flow filter like an afe pro dry s, and replace the muffler with a flowmaster deltaflow 40 series, or a 50 series, or go with a dynomax super turbo muffler. you may see a little performance from the dynomax....flowmaster is for sound.

as for tires...what size wheels you got??

 

Sell it and get the V6. I’m happy with the power of my I4 but I’m also hauling 290lbs less than you since I have the regular cab. The bottom line is you buy the I4 for gas mileage and the V6 for power.

 

my budget is somewhere in the area of 600 for performance upgrades, and 800 or so for tires size being 245/75 16 . whats yall opinion on the jardine cat-back exhaust

 

just my opinion, the jardine will be loud and ricey as hell........and probably too loud for a hunting truck.

 

Hey, some of the basics that you can do is CAI or just replace filter, headers, magnaflow seems well spoken of for gains. Personally I love that flowmaster sound. Good luck

 

yeah just a replacement muffler put on by a decent priced shop will be better for you... also as for tires you looking for a good all terrain or mud? I actually run a bargain brand tire from bobs tire in berkley springs WV called trail mark apr..they are pretty nice and just got my dad trailcutter RT's they are also pretty good....here is a short list I would do remove the secondary filter in your stock system... put a k&n drop in filter in,new muffler or have a shop fab up a cat back using a thrush turbo muffler ( part# 17715) for 2.5" and see about a header for truck at same time so shop can fab up the rest of exhaust... I dont like cat back "KITS" they cost way more than the parts they contain should. the muffler is a pretty cheap..but good flowing and proven muffler...so you can save few dollars there and put them into the rest of system

 

give me something solid cheap is always good i dont mind spending my hard earned money as long as its into something proven and yall tried, give me something for an exhaust and cai

 

prefer an all-terrain tire 6 ply

 

I had Kumho Roadventure ATs. Worked well when I was offroading on logging roads and ATV trails. Probably the same type of terrain you'd be encountering while hunting. Mostly muddy wooded areas. They've been out of stock for a while, and since I wanted to cut cost I went smaller this time. I have Yokohama Geolander A/T/S's now. Seem to work well, but haven't been offroad. Thicker tread than the Kumho's, and going 265/75 16 instead of 285/75 16 they are lighter and cheaper than the Kumho's. Tread pattern about the same so I would expect about the same OR performance. Like others have said removing the secondary air filter might help some with the power. Combine that with an AFE Pro Dry filter and you'll get a little better throttle response and a little better gas mileage. Or at least a few of us have. Removing the 2nd filter is free, AFE filter will run about $70 now I think. Either way, both are cheap to try.

 

i got a jardine. i love it. its loud and yes ricey sounding. definitley not for a hunting truck.

 

Personally, I would skip the exhaust if you're worried about scaring deer. My car is a touch louder than my truck, and I've never had a deer run out in the road close to it. In fact, they usually run away from it. More so than anyone I know with those deer alert things. So if that much of a difference spooks them in a place they expect to see/hear cars imagine on some back woods trail where you're trying to scope them out or setup camp. Just leave it stock and sneak up on them. You have a manual so you can always down shift as needed for more power, and if that's not enough on a trail use 4Lo and a higher gear (like 2nd or 3rd instead of 1st) to crawl along.

Not power related, but you might want to look into a set of sliders. They'll help protect the sides of the truck if you rub up against a tree or rock on a tight trail to the cabin/camp site/etc. Putting some 12v outlets under the hood and in the bed might be useful for spot or work lights if you need to setup camp or pack up the deer at night. Do you have the 110v bed outlet? Those fluorescent work lights run off the factory inverter quite well! You can run several of them and light up a large area around the truck. Small enough to tuck a couple and longer cord in the cab, and usually take a good beating without breaking a bulb. Some bed lights turn the bed and tailgate into a nice lighted work bench if you're cutting up the deer after the sun goes down.

who makes a set of good bolt on sliders without paying a ton and still look good

 

all pro makes some decent ones!! i'll probably be getting a set of these in the near future.
