few practice beads on scrap then welded in the hitch for now. hoping to get the rest done later this week. way better than the flux core welds i was getting just the other week. gas is so much easier.

any critiques? my stop/new bead blends obviously werent great.

need more consistent arc movement, and possibly more heat. looks like a lot of cold fusion on some of the hitch welds, if you want good strength for that i would grind a lot of those out and run a new bead.

The pot in your Hobart is the same one in the Miller welders built at the time. The only difference is in the wire drive housing using some plastic parts. All Hobart`s use Miller parts .

Like Stairgod said that knob took a hit they would fail electrically before mechanical

I am not a big fan of flux core for sheet metal to me it defeats the purpose.

Buy one that allows hard wire you can always run flux core .

I just like the .023 hardwire for thin stuff much better control .

yeah consistency is definitely needed. are you talking the square face of the hitch?
thats as hot as my 120v machine goes but i can move slower i suppose

The pot that I have on order is indeed a Miller part. Still not sure when I would have hit that knob hard enough to break it. Of course, theres a lot of moving, heavy objects in my shop. There's no telling.

I'm not more than a beginner, but that go looks much more consistent. Nice work! I think you could go a bit slower and/or weave tighter circles to burn it in a little more. Maybe slower and less wire speed?

Does anyone have the Vulcan Arcsafe welding mask from Harbor Freight? I’m going to start doing some mig and stick classes, just welding as a hobby. Not looking to spend a ton, so the Vulcan looks like a pretty good deal compared to millers. Also looking at the HTP striker supreme, but the headgear looks better on the Vulcan.

    Any input would be appreciated!

I think it looks pretty good. I don't think you can get much better with a 120volt rig. You consistency is pretty decent. If you had a machine with more power, there would be nothing you could do better.

Slowing down with less wire speed will help, but it will also make it easier to kill a contact tip. It's a trade off.

I like a flatter weld, but that's just me. Once you learn how far you can go on a spool of wire, you learn how to extend that spool.

I just saw that add an hour ago. I was going check it out tomorrow when I run up to Traverse City. I'm gonna look at it closely.

thanks! much happier with that one. ill give a little less wire speed a try on the weld. trying to keep enough to not burn have the wire burn back

glad to hear im on the right track. been following this thread long enough i picked up a few things.

id like a 210v machine but itd require running a new feed line to the garage. i have a whole pack of contact tips. no worries there.

first solid wire spool in this welder and a 40lb tank. see how far they both go this time.

You will be surprised how long that can will last.

Just keep turning down the flow until the weld looks bad.

That's what I use, I as well am a hobbyist welder. I use it for grinding, plasma cutting and mig welding.

With all that said, I used the $49.99 HF autoshade for years. I still have it for when I'm welding in odd positions. If it falls off my head, I never think "that's gonna be expensive" when it hits the floor. For a hobbyist, you can't really do better.
