Yes. I agree with you. The anti-gun establishment left unchecked would have us all owning break-open (breach) loaded weapons, which would be forbidden to be removed from our homes.

Once upon a time I could own large capacity magazines. Not anymore...

And now certain rifles can't have detachable magazines.

It's very sad that in my lifetime it has already changed so much...

Believe me I write a lot of letters, real paper letters with stamps. I also make phone calls too. I'm not going to stand by while my liberties are erased by politicians.

For us in California here are two very useful resources.

I bet, that if everyone in NO would have gotton a receipt and a check for the actual value of their firearms (which could be turned in to get their guns back, or they could just keep the check- their choice), things would have gone over a little better than they did. Hell, I might have even entertained the thought for a millisecond. But then I would've come to my senses, given them the couple of "throw aways" that I might have had, and kept the goodies to myself. One way or another...:spy:

    But that put aside:
Now is the time when we should be keeping in touch with our government as a whole by:
    1. writing letters by hand (i know this may be a weird concept.?.) to senators, governors, representatives, mayors. anyone who will listen. Let them know how you feel about gun ownership laws...( Be Nice About It)...
    2. Join the NRA. I dont mean to sound like a salesman here, but, There is strength in numbers and the best way to get your point across is to say it loudly. The NRA does this for us, and they do it to the people who really need to hear it. Unfortunately this whole process takes money to make it happen, thats where the membership fees and donations come into play.
    3. Invite friends and family out shooting with you. Responsibly introduce them to the positve aspects of shooting. The fun of plinking cans with the .22 or shooting the bull out of a target at 100 yds. Make it fun and safe for them and their enthusiasm will spread to others around them.

Things could only get as bad as the OP describes one way: if WE let it.
And thats all I've got to say about that.

In theory I agree, but when people are dying everyday and looters are shooting up the relief convoys, the Guard doesn't have the luxury of haggling with every gun owner about the true value of his/her weapon. Time was the ultimate factor here, and it took precedence over all else.

I agree with you on everything but the NRA part. It's been shown that the NRA is occasionally more interested in the political machine than the wants and desires of it's members. I'd say if you are seriously thinking about joining the NRA, you should research it's politics on areas that you feel strongly about, and make sure that you are aware of what your money goes toward. Otherwise, you might be funding an organization which lobbies against your personal values.

No way, no how, never. I would tell them to their face that the only way they would be able to seize my weapons is to kill me first.

If you point a weapon at a soldier/cop your life is forfeit. Thats common sense. At that point you are a bad guy.
Iraqis are allowed 1 AK per household. So in a combat zone we allow Iraqis full auto AK-47s but we disarm US citizens of semi-autos in a disaster zone? How does that make sense?

Just something that was brought to my attention the other day. Obama has backed off banning guns, he's now going after the ammo!! Just look at the FNH Five SevenN- he's after that ammo hard since he cant get the gun off the market. You can own and gun but cant have or get the ammo. The Constitution states the right to own and bare arms, but says nothing about the ammo for those arms!!!! Just something he's trying to slip in on some of his stupid bills!!!!! Something to think about!!!!

If I recall correctly the last time that mass gun control was implemented, it was by Hitler just before WWII. Im sure we all remember what happen the citizens of Germany!!!
The below is a quote from a website that a friend sent me, however I dont have the site address.

This year* will go down in history! For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration! Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!"

The Nazi Weapons Law (or_Waffengesetz_) which further restricted the possession of militarily useful weapons and forbade trade in weapons without a government-issued license was passed on March 18, 1938.

I'd gladly give mine up. Every time I read about an innocent child being killed by a stray bullet or one child kills another playing with daddies gun it's a very sad thing.
Last NY eve some hood rats in Atl were shooting off pistols in celebration. A stray bullet hit a young man attending a church service, killing him. I can't fathom the pain that his parents have had to endure. Unfortunately, this happens all over the US bacause guns are accessible to anybody with a couple hundred bucks in their pocket
Too many innocent victims dying...too many guns in the hands of the wrong people. JMO

You're way more likely to be killed by strangulation, drowning, fire, and a whole host of other things. And ALL of those, including gun violence, are way less likely to kill you than autos, yet nobody is saying we should give those up...

Clarification: All of those means all other methods of accidental death combined are lower than the number of people killed by automobile accidents yearly.
Also, I'm purely talking about accidental firearm deaths, not including murders.

The difference here being that automobiles aren't designed for the purposes of killing things...

True. But they're really good at it and far more likely to kill you - accidentally or not, by the way - than a gun. As in for children 0 to 19, 7,000 died from motor vehicles in 2006, where 154 died from accidental gun violence and 2200 died from firearm-related homicide.

Regardless, cars are clearly dangerous, no matter what their designed purpose. And there is an alternative, we can increase public transportation and get rid of cars, particularly in larger metropolitan areas. Why aren't you advocating that if your goal is to protect everybody?

Edit: And you're glossing over my point, which is that accidental gun violence is such a tiny portion of deaths nationwide (154 is nearly nothing compared to the millions of total deaths nationwide) that you should not take away rights based on such a rare occurrence. Preventing accidental death is a very weak argument against guns, given how rare a gun-related death is. We might as well ban plastic bags due to suffocation risk - that's a more likely method of death for a child (approximately 3 times as likely).

I'm a big advocate of public transportation. The problem with these arguments, though, is that they're based in different realities.

Automobiles are designed for the transportation of human beings from one place to another.

Firearms are designed to expel a projectile towards a target with the purpose of destroying that target.

While accidental deaths from either cause are tragic and lamentable, accidental deaths from firearms are still results of the intended designed purpose of that piece of machinery.

I'm not against firearm ownership. I just think these arguments about how you're more likely to die in an auto accident are Apples vs. Oranges.

nope, no one uses drugs since they are illegal and impossible to get.

Get rid of guns and criminals will switch to knives, bear mace, tasers, crossbows...and they will still get guns b/c they are criminals and dont obew the law... So since guns are now illegal, say some bad guy breaks into your home and procedes to rape your wife, daughter, and you cant do anything since he has a gun pointed at you, and well since your a law abiding citizen you dont have a gun....
Have fun living with that the rest of your life
