I believe you have good reasoning for returning the diff even after you took it apart and damaged bearings. They told you it was for your truck, but it is obviously not. They did not sell you the part you asked for, that is their mistake and they should make it right.

    This.

I bought a differential at a junkyard being told it was 4.30 — it was not. It was 4.10. They have a 30 day return policy, but this was six months later I found out.

I called them and they offered me an exchange on the spot.

The only real issue is that op torn the third apart, which most will render as voiding the warranty or exchange policy even if they shipped the wrong one.

Most business with excellent customer service will look pass that and offer an exchange. I say call them up, be nice and polite and explain the situation. Maybe don't explain to them you torn it apart?? Don't use profanity or threaten them with lawyer bs, because they'll just tell you to F off and you'll be on the losing end.

Right, I agree. i will call them and will not mention I tore it apart BUT I have to get 2 new bearings installed which are at least 1/2 the cost of the purchase unfortunately. Here is the issue, if I go ahead and bring it back they will try and exchange it and will not just straight issue a refund. They have nothing I need unfortunately. Will let you know what they say.

Update: I found a B06A Diff (3.91) ratio front and rear for a good price but the guy is 5 hours away. I will be Driving out Friday night after work (6PM :frusty:) to pick them up. All the parts I already purchased from Toyota for the rebuild will fit the new Diff. (Verified door sticker, VIN number, etc....). I won't be home until at least 3AM. Then I have a brake job first thing in the morning for a customer. RIP sleep. Then I have to do the diff rebuild, swap, and swap out the front diff as well. Sunday morning I am picking up my girl from the airport early. (8AM).

This will be a LONG weekend.

Can't you have it shipped? Seems like the cost of gas and your own time would outweight the shipping cost.

The deal for the front and rear 3.91 diffs was too good to pass up

Plus I have to get it done this weekend.

Update: picked up the diff last night. (11 hours of driving)

The diff spun freely, the spider gears felt fine and spun freely....but then...
I began removing the spider gears and was confused as to why the spider gear on the ring side didnt just fall out like the rest...

The gear felt as though it was spinning nicely by hand but it was having a really hard time coming out. I ended up having to put a socket in and hammer it out....

Honestly I don't know who I pissed off but I am having some seriously bad luck lately....

See photos. It looks like the journal in which the spider gear sits at some point lost all gear oil, overheated, and began melting.

I guess I cant use that spider gear or ring/spider gear carrier. I have not taken my diff that went bad on my truck apart yet but I am hoping I can use that carrier and a spider gear from there. We shall see I suppose.
