Buy a used exhaust system? Might as well pick up them used drums & rotors too. And grab those shocks while yer at it.

Used exhust don't have the same side affect as drum etc. Im sure you bought your truck used as well..... did you replaced all the parts on the truck yet with new ones?

There's nothing wrong with used parts unless your in MI where everything is worth nothing cause of rust

I made my own exhaust. 4 to 1 header, Gutted cat, Magnaflow 11226. Sounds slightly ricey, but I'm in high school. It was destined to happen lol

Ok, I actually finally decided on the magnaflow kit that I first referred to in my original post. I thought it over with where I wanted the exhaust routed and the pros and cons of each, and it led me right back to where I started. Anyway after I finally got my kit, the first thing that I did was cleaned and sanded the entire system with a scotch bright pad and acetone. The tip and muffler of this kit were polished to a chrome like finish. I’m not a fan of chrome at all on anything. Anyway I scuffed the tip in a one way direction to make it a more dull, brushed finish. I then painted the entire system with VHT satin clear paint. Paint is the flameproof type that is rated between 1300-2000 deg F.
I then installed the kit on my truck the next day. FYI it says in the instructions that the muffler should be in the vertical position, but to adjust after everything was installed then tighten all the bolts. My muffler ended up being on a slant to allow for the pipe hangers to line up correctly. The kit fit was phenomenal....up until I started tightening the bolts. I cussed enough for all of us up here. It just kept squalling in different directions. I’d loosen the bolts, readjust the muffler angle and tighten them again. I finally got it to where I was satisfied, all except the very last hanger at the tip. I can wiggle the exhaust and the hanger will start to come out of the rubber. I did use lube to install this because that’s what most of them take to stretch over the flared end. Now it wants the back right out over the flared end. It’s not much pressure, and won’t come all the way out of the rubber. I walked away from it and slept on the idea of how to get the hanger to stay in place and it all still look good. A worm hose clamp just doesn’t fit my style of work... I ended up with a very simple e-clip that clips onto to flat portion of the hanger stud and won’t let it come out of the rubber.
I’ve only driven the truck once, and there is a crazy curing process that goes along with the paint that I used. I’ll keep you updated on how the kit holds up.

? - any trick to gutting the cats? Did you recycle the guts afterwards? i suspect they are worth a few bucks since people like to steal them.

easier to cut it out and replace with a piece of pipe. plus you can make a few bucks selling it

I just took a big ass flatblade and hammer and beat it out. Took awhile though. Then found some pipe to run the length inside so I could keep the cat housing incase they were to look underneath during emissions testing

Here in CA it's best to keep the cats visible....those front ones are a pain to have to remove every couple years.

ah, so you put a straight piece in to prevent extra turbulence in the empty chamber or weird resonance. makes sense.

Do you get any fault codes with the "test pipe"? Do you get any HP gains?

I threw two spark plug non foulers on the rear oxygen sensor for that. No code, passed emissions for 2 years now. Butt dyno felt some change
