Flip-Pac Shells

I'd be afraid to put my 240lbs in the flip pac with those supports pressing on the hood/fender tops...

I have one, and love it. I don't have any current pics but I'll try and get some up in a day or so. My FlipPAc is part of an expo build. By the way, the struts that go to the hood don't actually support any weight. It's handled by a torsion spring kind of thing.
The really great thing about them is you can wheel all day and set up camp in a couple of minutes.

Awesome, can't wait to see some pics of it. I was thinking of going this route because for one it would really benefit for my work, and I like to be able to have the option of just to stop and pitch a tent in luxury haha.

Cost me right around four grand and I picked mine up at the factory in Long Beach. Might be more from a dealer somewhere else, don't know.

Rear view - My 2 drawer platform is 10.5" high and I can still stand up inside the tent. I'm just over six feet.


This "floor" is under the bed area when the tent is closed. Or when you don't want to be disturbed.

Bed area of the tent. I put some D-rings on the sides and made some nylon straps to permanently hold two sleeping bags. Why have to roll them up?


Part of the tent "floor" can be used as a hammock or storage area. They say it'll hold 100 lbs. I've never put that much weight in it.


I have two of these inexpensive inclinometers, one on the dash and one on the door. Helps to get a level campsite.

 

Thanks man for all the pics. Also when it is folded up in shell mode, does the tent like hang down in the bed area, or is there a place on top where it folds into?

 

The tent is held up by the "floor" thing. It goes across the whole bed area and is like a ceiling in the shell when everything is closed up. It's a pretty clean setup. It can all be parked to one side when the tent is up giving it a very open feeling.

PROS:
Instant setup
Good quality tent
Comes with complete rain fly
Comfortable mattress

CONS:
Heavy, nearly 400 lbs.
Expensive
Difficult to remove/install

On a competent truck it's nice to be able to go just about anywhere and be able to stay when you get there. You can definitely camp in places where you'll be undisturbed. Depending on your rig, regular campers, RVs, etc., can't go where you can. The set up is so simple you'll be deep into spoiled the first time you use it. But if you want to wheel super technical trails or bring home a refrigerator you need to get it off and on. Not easy. I have LED lights and an 12v outlet up in mine so I have to have wiring disconnects. If you're in a club that does regular off road camp trips, Flip Pacs are perfect. Also good if you do long distance travel, Mexico, C.A. Their weight is roughly comparable to a sturdy bed rack with a good roof top tent and probably a bit more aero. You want to keep the rest of what you carry as light as possible and stowed as low as possible. Those are the highlights I guess. These obviously aren't for everyone but it works for me.

 

Great info. I think it really fits me pretty well because for one I love taking surf trip down to baja and mexico, and go camping and wheeling in the sierras a lot over summer, and most importantly for work to. Hopefully I will get one in the near future.

 

One of these may be in my future. I've been reading a lot on expedition portal about them. I was going to go with a rack and RTT but this seems a much better way to go. I just have to get over the change in visibility. Where in Long Beach did you get yours and why didn't you go with Adventure Trailers version which is supposed to be a bit more reinforced.

Where do you get those inclinometers?

 

One more question, do you think it's possible to mount a roof rack on it?

There are a few members there who have great Flippac setups. Search for Wasurf or Tacodoc.
I just sent an email to Adventure Trailers which sells beefed up Flippacs for offroad use. Send them an email or a phone call.

I already can't decide between a Bestop Supertop and a hard shell...now this gets thrown in the mix. I'll never make up my mind!

 

Tbird-
I started out wanting a bestop in addition to my tonneau for camping. Then I made a sleeping platform to sleep under my tonneau cover for camping. Then I was pretty set on a rack with a roof top tent. If you are planning on using it for camping/expo travel I think the Flippac is the only way to go. A little pricey but a couple members here have already gone the route I was planning on and ended up with the Flippac and never looked back. Depends on what your usage will be.
