Lets get rid of that last bit of chrome!

Is it a printed overlay or did you actually cut off the chrome logo?

 

Well it's printed, but I replaced the whole logo. It was just pegged on there so it can be put back if I ever decide I don't like the retro thing.

Nice! But there is a bit of the story missing here. Being an airbag and all, how did you get that off? I'd guess at prying, but there seem to be some tool marks on the back side there.

I do have one of @rrentrop 's matte black stickers on mine, but getting full coverage with some spray paint would be awesome.

How many times did you accidentally honk while swapping them?

 

Yeah, they are pegs, but they are melted on the back. I just took some flush cutters and snipped them until they were narrow enough to fit through. If I put it back there is still enough meat to melt it back on, but I'd probably just glue it. Pulling the air bag was no big deal, two t30 screws gets the whole front of the wheel off. then 4 8mm bolts removes the airbag. It stays in a nice little package and goes right back in when done. If you didn't want to pull the airbag, and didn't mind adhering it back on, you could get it off without pulling the airbag. the emblem is actually rubbery, so you wouldn't break it if you pulled up an edge and got behind it with some flush cutters.

Only once actually, but it was around 11pm and I was just taking measurements. I disconnected the battery to actually swap it, my neighbors already think I'm insane.

I've stayed away from airbags so far. I might have to give that shiny PoS at try.

 

Haha I feel your pain, the first time I took it apart and saw the airbag I was like nope, and started putting it back together. Then I saw that chunk of chrome again and just said f'it. It's way easier than it seems. I got some pics along the way if you're interested.

Alright you got it! I even drew little circles on them.


driver side cover panel pops right off, and behind you'll find a t30 that needs to be loosened. It's got a cage on it so the screw stays in there just make sure it's loosened all the way.




Same story on passenger side. t30 screw, easy to pop off panel.




Once those screws are out the front of the wheel should be loose. Behind it you'll find this. The little yellow clips get popped up, then the whole plug can be popped up. There is also a ground wire on a little spade connector on the bottom that needs removed. I recommend disconnecting the battery before this... Nothing bad happened to me though.




These 4 8mm nuts get removed and the whole airbag charge comes off.




All that will be left is the bag itself. You just flex the sides of the plastic and it'll slide right out of the steering wheel cover. The airbag is packed really tight in a steel box and doesn't get disturbed during the process.




Here is what is left. I forgot to snap a pic before I removed the factory logo.

Whole thing took maybe 10 minutes to get apart, and it goes together just as easy.

 

any chance you could make one up with the TRD logo? Doesn't even have to say Pro haha

 

Funny thing, I already have one like that mostly drawn up on my computer. Although I went with the more jdm style like this

I could do the newer TRD style though, I think it might look better actually. Would you be interested in buying one?

Alternatively you can disconnect your battery neg cable, and then at the steering wheel work your way around the emblem gently pulling up at the edges with a gentle tool, and cut the nubs with an Xacto knife or razor. This is how another member did it and posted pics in a DIY long ago but the pics are broken.

 

Nice, I assumed that was possible after doing it the hard way. The logo is really flexible.

 

I tried doing it the way I described years back and forgot to undo the battery, ended up pressing and honking the horn and scared my self and never went back to try it again lol.
