How long and how well is the filter still filtering? When will it just be bypassing instead of filtering? GTS Bruce

What do you mean "bypassing"? Is there a mechanism that allows oil to bypass the filter when the filter becomes dirty and clogged?

Because I was bored and curious, I did a change at 6k just to have a look. The beauty of the cartridge filters is that you can freely evaluate it during the work without sawing the thing apart.

Even with a brand new motor where there should have been the worst loading, it looked pretty darn free. A few sparkly bits, but no real concern about loading.

Yep. A plugged filter should never lead to starvation.

Stick with OEM and it is good for 10K. Cartridge filters have more dirt holding capacity and will withstand higher delta P.

Yes. Oil filters have an internal bypass. That way if the filter is clogged you don't starve the bearings. Dirty oil is better than no oil.

Spin on filters are new fangled. Old oil filters were cartridge.

I have zero worry about the capacity. Oil stays nice and clean looking for a long time after change, and there is very little in the cartridge housing or element during an oil change. Filter sizing has to be one of the easier design analysis.

It's not hard (I have done hundreds of times) as long as you pick the correct media with the proper micron rating.
Pro tip: The particles that you see won't harm your engine. The particles you cannot see will kill your engine.

Fun facts: The human hair has a diameter of 50 micron or so. Bacteria is about 3-4 micron. Clearance between cylinder wall and rings (modern engines) is between 3-7 microns. You cannot see with your naked eye any particle below 40 microns.

Oil filters are not created equal. Some spin on filters only filter down to 25 micron.

    Choose wisely.

Only til the pressure differential between inlet and outlet is great enough to open the check bypass lol. And, the dirtier it gets the faster it gets dirtier!

How long and how well is the filter still filtering?

Depending on the filter and what part of the world it was made, 7-25k miles

When will it just be bypassing instead of filtering?

Probably when it looks like this

    Hope that helps

I've pulled out worse! I've taken cartridge filters out of vehicles that were literally starting to fall apart.
