belt or a chain?

i have a 09 tacoma. is it a timing belt or chain?

 

you got the v6?? if so...you got a chain.

 

+1. I think you can even see it though the oil fill tube.

 

When is it recommended to change a time chain? Isn't it 100,000 mi?

 

i am almost certian that there is a service life for the chain but most people never change them. i have had two 200K+ vehicles with chains that were never serviced

 

The four banger is a chain as well, Tsubaki I might add.

There isn't any mention of it in the service manual up to 120k miles at least.

 

The good thing about timing chain is that it typically won't break. Belts are another story, so you change them to insure you never do engine damage. As a chain elongates, you may notice poor performance. In severe cases, the tensioner can over-extend and the chain may contact other engine components, which is obviously not desirable. Given that it is roller chain, 120,000 should be adequate.

 

ummm, I need to look at the manual.... u telling me we have to change the chain at 120k? that means I have to change the water pump no?

 

The manual only covers up to 120k miles and there's no mention of it, anywhere.

yep.....timing belt...needs replacing at 90k. thats when i'll do mine, along with water pump, seals and my other belts too. good insurance!!

 

If you do change the chain... you should do the waterpump at the same time. It's not necessary, but it's a lot of work. It'd suck to have the waterpump fail 20k later and have to tear the chain back off to replace a pump. I changed out the pump on my vr-4 at 60k when the belt was done... not because it was needed but because it's a $120 insurance policy to get you through to the next change.

 

The water pump on a 1GR-FE V6 engine is an externally mounted water pump. The pump is run by the external serpentine V-ribbed belt not by the timing chain.

 

Ah well then, no point in doing it Most vehicles are usually driving it with the t-belt/chain. Didn't look at the taco's. (Granted, at 7k miles on the odo I had awhile to do it ) Thanks for the info.

 

That is one thing Toyota has done right lately by mounting the water pump on the outside of the there motors makes replacement a lot less time consuming.

 

the timing belt is a pain then i gotta do the water pump too...
no offical word from toyota is chain or belt?
