Doesn't matter, the dry ones still don't do a good job filtering out the fine stuff. They're thicker cause they don't use oil. A properly oiled filter works good cause the oil helps catch finer particles but as still crap for offroading. Heck even with stock filters the fine dust can get through. Just saying if you care about your engine.

I don't know how I feel about Primer on these horns. It leaves a very rough finish compared to no primer, or a very light dusting of primer. The ones I paint without primer are so glossy you can see yourself. With primer, the finish becomes rough and gritty.

Of course the solution is to wet sand, like I do with 400 grit on body panels.

But I'm not about to wet sand 200 horns.

Try a different primer, there are thinner primers. As you know many primers also fill in imperfections, they're thick so you can sand. But in your case you don't need that, you just need surface adhesion because you're painting bare metal after blasting.

Try self etching primer, it's a bit thinner. You don't need a heavy coat. Or even paint with that doesn't require primer. Are you using rattle cans or a spray gun? A lot more paint options if using a spray gun, better results, faster, & in the long run cheaper too since you're working in bulk.

IMO a satin/semi gloss would look better than gloss anyway for horns.

I'm using Rustoleum Self-Etching Primer. All my paint projects thus far I've wet sanded with 400 grit between primer coats.

I have the air capacity to run a paint gun, but not the drier/oil separator for it. I use Rustoleum Industrial Black Gloss paint.

With self etching primer you really don't need multiple coats so that would save you the time of having to sand in between primer coats. Don't know if you're actually trying to get a super smooth finish but IMO it's not needed on horns. You're just wasting labor. That's all fine and dandy if you were just doing it for your own project to make it look good but now that you're doing bulk you don't need to do all that & can still have a nice quality looking product.

Maybe try testing cutting out all those steps & see how it comes out/holds up.

 

That's the one I had...they let a lot of fine dirt through but if you're mostly on the street they're probably fine

 

I was saying I usually sand with Self-Etching Primer on my other projects like my toolbox, doors, etc. I usually do multiple coats with wet-sanding with 400 in between.

For the horns, I usually do two coats primer then two coats base with no sanding.

I'm trying to achieve a glossy finish to match the factory. I used to use flat black and semi-gloss, but it just didn't look good.

 

Get a big oven, powder coat, no primer needed! Then I can send you stuff to powder coat for me.

 

I'd melt the plastic the horns are made of fairly quickly haha.

Believe me, if I had room for a powdercoating oven I'd have one already. Paint is overrated.
