Truck only has 310 miles on it so I'm a new to my own noise, but her it goes.

Somewhere between 50-60 mph, I hear a slight harmonic "whirring" noise seemingly when I let off of the gas. When I get back on the gas, it goes away. Keep in mind this is under gentle acceleration and deceleration, I'm not dropping of the gas and hammering it back on. With the radio on/off makes no difference (I'm pretty sure so far)

I searched about the rear-end whining, but I can't totally tell where this noise is coming from at this early stage. Thoughts? Thank you.

The fix is turn up the little knob that says volume, or fight with Toyota. I think it is inherent with the 8.75" rearend. The 8.75", to my understanding, has been used for years in over seas Hilux's where their cabs rattle, squeak and clunk so bad you can't hear the diff howl.

OK guys, going to document it with Toyota. My best friend is a 28 year Toyota tech where I bought my truck. At least I'll hear the straight dope from him how/if to proceed with a fix,
even if he tells me to turn the volume up . . . . I'm ok with the best option.

I'm interested to hear other thoughts/advice still.

there's plenty of reading around here if you're inclined. things have changed since this was big deal but it still pops up, so you should get informed. of course it's possible it's not your diff so keep your mind open. good luck.

TRUE. BUT, it still sounds like what I'm experiencing. Thank you.

My 2017 had the same symptoms, which stopped after Fluid Film was applied to the undercarriage. Coincidence? Maybe, but the howling has pretty much stopped.

Some diffs whine or give off weird noises in the girst 2k miles, the break in period og gears. When i put 5.56 in they did that. Look up break in new gears.

Make sure u do the proper break in period of the gears. Try avoiding heavy pulling or excess acelarations. Once they are broke in everything should be fine. N change the fluids after 2k miles.

It's a common issue in these trucks, it is harmonic vibration thru the chassis.

I just had Haley Toyota in Midlothian, VA fix my issue with the rear end whine on my 2018 Tacoma Manual Transmission. I provided them the TSB 00013-18. I was skeptical but it worked and I have no more issue with the whine. Now if they can fix the fuel mapping/throttle issue I'd have the perfect truck. I just opened up a case with Toyota to discuss the mapping issue.

No no no no no no.

All of our rear diffs are going to fail....just like they did on the 2nd gen with the same fucking noise. We can post our half baked theories on exactly what we think may be the issue (fully displaying our combined ignorance of how rear diffs work) because THAT makes it all better.

I will say this, the frequency of this issue has obviously changed over the 2nd Gen. This one slowly drives people mad, makes them obsessive and makes them post the same thing over and over again. Fuck, people sell their Tacos because of this issue and still lurk in these threads forever. I think Toyota should weaponize whatever frequency this thing operates at and sell it to the US Government. China declares war on us, we blast this Howl on loudspeakers and they lose their will to fight - they instead create a forum where they do nothing but bitch about the noise. We'd own the world.

Getting back to our little community....it's obvious that the only way we can deal with this is to post incessantly about this issue. We can ignore that it's harmonics. We can ignore that's it's been around for 15 years. The only clear path forward is to discuss it day in and day out until the frames rot from rust.

Maybe the mods will make a subforum for the third gens - we can call it the 3rd Gen Wailing Wall. All of the posts - the Howl, the Stumble, the heartache about the rear drum brakes, the daily whining about the lack of seat adjustment, the missing cubby-hole, blah blah blah can all be posted in a safe space.

The OP sounds new to Tacoma's so it's better to just let him know that the sound is harmonic vibration rather than have him speculate thinking its a mechanical problem.

So, if it is a harmonic, what's the fix? Any?

I'd think a known harmonic is an easy fix from a Toyota engineering standpoint.

2019 OR DC AT 4x4 here. Bought it last week, 200 miles on her. On the highway today I heard the sound :( It was at all highway speeds, not just a small band.
