@Thulsa Doom -- I've bought two sets of aftermarket 16x7 6-lug wheels in the last year, both from Japan. As far as quality, they're on par with RAYS TE37x.

    Hi all,

I plan to install a FWC at some point within the next couple years. With this much added weight and also a higher center of gravity, would there be any disadvantages to installing tall skinny tires, such as 255/80r17, versus the wider heavier 285's?

Let's just call it my 401K.
It was in the very first post:
    Negatives of a narrower tire:
    1. Provides less stability on and off the road
    2. Vehicle is more prone to trail damage because a tall narrow tire wants to cut through a medium as opposed to floating on top bringing your underbelly in closer proximity to obstacles on the trail

Maybe in Canada, eh? :boink::):) Not down here though. Huge difference when you see a 285 vs. 255 mounted on a taco. Very noticeable.

I hear you, just saying the tall/skinny concept is more about the ratio than the width or height on its own.

But yeah, 285/75 don't look skinny at all.

I guess it's just how one would view it.

It's the "skinny" part where most of the benefits comes from. Less chance of rubbing on the uca's, less rolling resistance, lighter weight, arguably better traction in certain conditions.

I love my skinny's, but holy balls the weight from stock tires to these was a beating to get used to.

I just swapped to 255/85r16 Toyo M55 which are REALLY heavy duty. 58 lbs. they measure big at 33.4x10.4 so they don't look skinny mounted up.

Ride is very firm and sporty on road, I'm guessing it will be pretty harsh off road without airing down.

Just had some 255/80/17 Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx Installed. Love them so far. Previously had BFG A/T KO2s in 275/70/17.

Is there a front shot and are these that much skinner than 265 in person? Thinking of putting these on my PRO when it arrives

I am interested in putting 255/80 17 on 17" TRD Pro wheels on stock OR suspension. Will they rub?

I presume you were referring to me (it helps to quote the post you are referring to so the poster is notified). Here is a front and rear shot. They are not too noticeably skinnier than 265s but they are quite a bit thinner than the 275s I had on previously. I’m still happy with them, however.

So I posted my truck on this thread a couple weeks ago and a few people asked me to review my lift and tire. I've put roughly 1000 miles on both and here's my thoughts so far.

    • The Bilstein 5100 lift rides awesome and looks awesome on these trucks. Rides as good, if not better, than factory and my OME coils have settled a little bit and the truck still sits close to level.
    • The Maxxis BigHorn tires are a little noisy but look and ride great. I've used them once in a heavy snow and could not get it stuck. I have only rubbed one time and that was at full turn and extension. I never ever rub on daily drives and I still have the mudflaps on all 4 wheel wells. My MPGs have went down from about 19-20 per tank to 16-17.
    • My truck is a standard and I have no need for a re-gear with the taller tires. I still ride in 4th, 5th, and 6th comfortably all the time and I live in a very mountainous region of WV. On flatter terrain, my MPGs would probably still hover around 18-19 per tank.
    • Overall opinion after 1000 miles: This lift and tire combo is awesome for someone looking to add a little extra aggressiveness to an otherwise daily driver. Obviously I'm not into overlanding or extreme offroading but my truck definitely sits up noticeably higher and will have no problem attacking brutal WV winters.
Lift: Bilstein 5100 shocks all the way around
    OME 887 coils
    Dakar AALs in rear

    Tires: Maxxis BigHorn 255/85r16s

Do you have a picture of your truck with the 275s on them? Maybe a side by side with the old 275s and now 255s? Did you have any rub with 275 ko2?

I'd be super surprised if he is. I'm betting that's a 2"+ lift on it.

Bilstein 5100s all around with OME 888 coils up front (give about 2.75" lift). Dakar full leaf pack in the rear (give about 2.5" lift).

Anyone running 17” Ray10’s with a 255/80R17 tire? If so what lift and do you have any rubbing? I know the Ray10’s are 17x8.5 and many people say the 4.5 backspacing is the only dimension that matters with rims. But I’m wondering about a rim that is 1.5” wider than stock if there would be any rubbing?

Got the same question! I just got my 17" ray10s and am torn between 255/80/17 cooper st maxx and 275/70/17 bfg koa2. Going to go with the bilstein performance lift from @HeadStrong Off-Road 6112s/5160s with med duty dakar leafs set at 4/5 setting. From people I've talked to, 255 80 17 will fit wo rubbing but I dont know about the 275!
