    Just curious as why you are recommending no sand.

    As for my question, I am getting ready to install some left over PA Flagstone between the house and a sidewalk, about a 2 1/2 width. I had planned on putting in crushed bluestone, tamp it down, then add about an inch of sand, tamp it down, then install the flagstone.

    I really wanted to avoid installing concrete then setting the flagstone on top of the concrete using mortar.

    Since we both have the same climate I thought you might have a better way to set the stone.

    Stone dust compacts better, but holds moisture - can freeze in winter and expand.
    Sand provides good drainage, but is difficult to compact well enough to provide a solid base.

    Sand also has a tendancy to wash away in heavy rains. I have built sidewalks using both and the sand has always failed on me. Most professional hardscapers will use several inches of stone followed by a few inches of crushed stone, compacted in layers.

    I think that they gravel is your best bet for the intitial base. It is more stable than the finer crushed material

    I will go that route. I do have 6 bags of sand that I will use under a shed that I relocated.

    Actually...Being as the concrete is "Crushed", it will offer a more stable base than the Gravel. Gravel is "Fractured". Crushed has more sharp edges, and can interlock to form a much more stable platform.

    Does the mesh size of the crushed concrete matter in the initial base layer?

    You generally dont want any peices to be larger than 2". Out here, We use lime treated ABC. Crushed ABC to be exact. Not sure what you guys call it, but there are 2 types. "Concrete" ABC uses natural stone, while "Crushed" is , obviously, Crushed. If being used as a base, you want about 7 to 9% moisture. Then, Compact it useing a Plate compactor, or a heavy roller.

    Whats the base going to hold up?

    I think that Susan is making a walkway.

    We usually use 2" gravel as the base followed by crushed compacted in layers. Interesting info about the crushed concrete linking together.

    Ok. THe concrete will also absorb huge amounts of water, due to the lime content in it. Also, it will be more able to bond to the conrete being pured for the sidewalk. And should be cheaper.

    Out here....interesting enough.....We have to engineer soil for building, so as to not allow it to be washed away if a HUGE rain comes. Many times, we have to over excavate 10 feet deep, and remove all the "Unstable" soil, and replace with a soil that can bear the load of the building being erected. It is interesting stuff. You have to take into account soils expansion, "Shrinkage", and its cohesivness, with the propper moisture content....as well as its density. *sigh*...I miss me job.
