Good time to test fit the windshield to make sure everything lines up correctly. When I get into work later this morning, I’ll check for dimensions for the windshield opening.

Ya, I should start shopping for one. My brother in law works for Safelite so I should see if he can get a deal on one.. I have some dimensions, just didn't have any for the height of the roof at the middle of the windshield opening. I git this from the local dealer.

How did you end up repairing the roof? New parts or straighten the old?

Edit: Doh. I somehow missed reading half of page 2 and asked a dumb question. My bad. :anonymous:

Thanks all. I straightened the roof as shown on page 2. I then tested my patience limits with Bondo to resculpt it. It would have been much easier to re-skin it, but also much more $..

If ever you can't find something good on TV, I highly recommend watching the Eastwood Company's videos. The ones on mig welding, and sanding body filler/body work are especially informative, but they are all a good watch.

    Great work!!!

Are you planning a complete overhaul on the engine? After reading this , that seems to be the big bogey in this whole thing. Whether crap get into the innards or not. I bet the engine can be opened up and rebuilt - if you start it with junk In the cylinders ... it’s a gonner

I am actually taking the crossed-fingers approach on this. I don't think damaged cylinders will be an issue and if any are it will be up near the intake valve and already damaged. If there is anything in the cylinder I think it will burn out as plastic and wood burn easy and it gets awful hot in those cylinders. I think worst case scenario it could have a bent valve or 2. I am fairly confident it will run and if it doesn't we'll cross that bridge we get to it...

I highly recommend getting a cheap borescope (theyre $35-45 on Amazon for a wifi/bluetooth model) uses your phone as the display/record device.. pull the plugs, and inspect.. the one I got has a light on it, and 90 degree mirror attachment, as well as a small hook to pull items... if there is an item in there.. set TDC carefully (no forcing it to turn), pull the timing cover/chain, disconnnect everything and pull the heads... get items out.. new head gaskets, and rebuild it from there.. better safe than sorry... DO NOT PULL THE (DI) INJECTORS UNLESS YOU PLAN TO REPLACE THE SEALS if they are out for any amount of time(they expand, and cannot be re-installed).. (there is a required tool for most (I know BMW does)) good luck... best to do this while the rad, front bumper, hood and everything are out of the way..

^this^ These engines are built with super tight tolerances (unlike older engines). They also cost significantly more than your typical jasper :)

If you are putting this effort into the rest of it, it’s worth a week to pull it and check it all out. I’m super impressed with what you’ve done so far and would hate to read here that you got it all done and cranked it and ruined the block.

The painting is done. Had a heck of a time trying to buff out 2000 scratches, I think because I waited a week after clearing it. Ended up picking up some 3M trizact 3000 and 5000 and it came out glass smooth no scratches. I use lake country orange pad with meguiars m105 and the white pad with m205. My second time buffing so I'm still learning..

I would have gone scooped if I didn't get a takeoff hood for 175$ from someone swapping out for a scooped hood.
