Locker Anytime Mod for Dummies 2005+

Seems manuals must operate differently than automatics. I've never done it until today, but I switched between 2wd - 4wd - 4low with the locker on and off without any problems.

 

Just finished this mod last night and everything works as advertised. Thank you for the write-up and plug-n-play relay OP!

Looking forward to testing this out on the drag strip at the local sand dunes.

UPDATE: I fried something when I installed the wrong relay, and now my locker and 4wd will not engage. I'm hoping I can fix it once I have the time to take the dash apart for a weekend. Is anyone on here experienced with a multimeter and wiring that could give me some tips? I'm stressed that I might never be able to use 4wd again because of a miscommunication, and I'm by no means a professional mechanic or electrician. Should I just try and run new wires for all wires coming out of the locker switch? Could the switch itself be fried? That's where the smoke was coming from, and there is a bit of melty looking plastic around the contacts. Any help or pointers would be much appreciated.

 

Among the use of an incorrect relay, short circuiting is the cause of "smoke", as you say. Wires burning the coating off. This happens first at small/bad connections with only a couple wires really conducting the electricity. Check connections first for obvious burn-outs.

Those tiny wires can't handle that current. Not many short circuiting systems I've (accidentally) wired up, can. Comes with experience.

I would replace any bad looking connections
As he said above.
Get a new switch, put everything back to stock and try the locker.
Do not try the mod again unless you have someone close that has already done it.

do all the Tacomas already have a locker motor? I want to try this mod on my 2009 4x4 SR5.

 

Never mind, now that I have read thru the whole thread and all the problems that have come up I am not going to do it.

 

This is a mod for the off road trim package only. It isn't applicable for you truck.

Anyone ever had issues with the relay clicking on and off non stop? When I drive I hear constant clicking from behind the glove box. Definitely a relay. Locker still functions perfectly despite the clicking

 

No , never
I would replace it. Or maybe reground it.
Only time I hear it is when I use it or when I start the truck.

Definitely not. Sounds like something isn't/wasn't connected correctly.

Glad it stopped, but not knowing what the problem was would leave me concerned it will rear its head again, at the most inopportune time possible. I recommend double-checking all your connections and, if possible, swapping out the relay.

 

This is the second relay I’ve had issues with. First one didn’t work right out of the box (Amazon) this one is radio shack. Even while it was rapid clicking it still locked and unlocked perfectly. Will double check everything

 

Upon watching the video and then following directions I had a problem of blowing the ig1 no2 fuse, I realised that the video OP posted and direction of the diode was OPPOSITE of the step by step directions! Just pay close attention to that and everything will work out fine

 

Dang, that's some impressive paying attention to detail right there. I made that video before I switched over to the relay's with the LED installed. Without the LED it doesn't matter which way the diode is installed, but with the LED it does. Of course Murphy would make it be backwards of what the LED version requires. I changed it in the written description and every relay I sell has the poles marked, but if someone built their own relay it could be a problem. I'll have to remake the video, but until then I'll change the description in the first post to be more clear.

 

It took blowing that fuse multiple times to figure out lol

BTW in case anyone has an issue after doing the swap and lose your window control, ac, blower motor, and abs light lights up, that’s all the symptoms of popping the ig1 no 2 fuse in the lock panel fuse box

 

Finally got around to doing this mod this weekend. Used a relay off of Amazon, soldered a 1N4007 snubber diode between the terminals for the relay coil, made all the crimp connections fit and so far so good! Tested it out in a big dirt parking lot. Everything seems to work 2WD, 4Hi and 4Lo. Wicked pumped to finally get this done. Doesnt happen too often, but theres definitely occasions when having the rear locked up in 4Hi is useful. Seemed to work pretty good this weekend doing some mild snow wheeling up a pretty steep little hilll.

The scary part:


Making the y-connector - pre-solder. Really only needs to be 3-4 inches long, but better long than short I suppose


You can see the diode I soldered into the relay under the cover. Its under the heat shrink. The band marks the cathode (negative) but gets installed opposite. That way it will snub out the high voltage spike as the magnetic field decays. If its installed the way that you would expect (pos to pos) and (neg to neg) then it will conduct straight to ground and blow the fuse. (at least thats my understanding ...) So in this pic the one terminal that isnt hooked up yet is the ground pin
