Transmission Slip

I have a 2006 Tacoma Prerunner. A new problem just arose. Scenario: I will be driving at say 55-65 mph and have to brake suddenly and slow about 15 - 20 mph slower.....I-95 in south Florida. As soon as I reach that slower speed the transmission seems to slip out of gear...if I get right back on the gas the motor wll rev up and drop in gear. What do you think?

 

im gonna say its probably the drive by wire setup. may be worth a look tho to see how the fluid level is.

 

Probably totally normal. What you describe as a 'slip out of gear' is probably the transmission doing exactly what its supposed to do....downshift into a lower gear. Then, when you press on the gas...the rpm's will be higher because it downshifted previously and now needs to get back into the original gear it was already in before you put the brakes on.

nope she's not kidding, that's the nature of the beast. your transmission tries to be smart and when you hit the breaks it downshifts to hold a lower gear for you, then when you get back on the gas it freaks and gets back into the original gear

I have put 105,000 miles on this truck since its new. This is not a normal downshift. Did you ever take grandma's car for a joyride when you were a kid. Remember the old neutral drop. That is what it feels like. It has only begun the last 250 miles or so.

Then it was done wrong. Bet you $20 the fluid level is too low.

You should've given a better description to start off with.

Why didn't you have the system flushed?

 

My 2010 DC would have been a perfect car except for the dumb transmission (had the tsb done). When I slow down to go over a speed bump (under 10mph) and then get back on the gas, the engine just revs up but no response from the trans. It's much worst when the car is coasting (slightly down hill).

And when trying to accelerate at around 50, it refuses to down shift even the gas pedal is almost to the floor. But this I had expected from Toyota trans, trying to use less gas.

 

I had an 06 with similar symptoms, everyone said it was normal including the dealer. As it turns out the valve body was going out at 86k. I sold it and started over with a different truck. What I would do is take your ride back to the dealer and have them service the tranny again, but this time do a full flush. That should help some but i'm afraid your truck will never be the same again.

 

That sounds very abnormal. My transmission (09 V6 auto) downshifts just fine with throttle pressure at highway speeds.

 

My old 94 Lexus SC400 did this too so I assume Toyota design their shifting points conservatively to save gas. I should at least check the oil level.
