That's exactly why I'd want it... as I have a bad habit of changing my plans/routes on the fly, and then leave myself thinking "Don't do anything stupid because they won't know to look for you here."

I didn't realize it would show stuff on the actual radio display. But just hit up the youtubes. I'll have to mess with that.

Sadly Brett's days of just giving everyone the finger to get them to do something have ended. :luvya::brianr: Here's to Brett and his primary communication method (Smoke Signals were always plan B). :D

Every CO TW 4x4 trip this year we used HAM, only 1-2 didn't have it each trip.

Agnus has a HAM Radio and thats all she is gonna get. No sense in setting up 2 radio systems when you can get into HAM as cheaply as you can get a CB. You gain some knowledge and respect for the air waves by getting your license.

I couldn't pass up CB. With a quality setup and smart spending CB is great for communications. Right now we are in a low sun-spot cycle so long distance signal reflection interference is not an issue. I like talking skip reaching halfway around the world. Hitting contacts as far away as Hawaii and Newfoundland.

Stupid question since I've never had HAM or been in someone's vehicle on a trail run who did - doesn't it get old having to repeat your call sign constantly for something like trail communications? While I can't deny the capability and range advantages over CB, all the extra protocol has always seemed not worth it to me, at least thinking about that application in all the scenarios I've used CB.

While technically you should, low wattage between vehicle communications in the mountains will likely not reach out very far so many don't. Also, once every 10 minutes of constant communications is the requirement or at the end of communications. The reality is once you get used to it, call signs becomes 2nd nature. If that is your hold back I would say just make the jump.

Respect as in some understanding of how to communicate over radio and respect for the equipment it plus why it should be tuned.

So many bad CB setups out there because no one has taken the time to learn about radio communications and why tuning is so important. Just hook it up and add it to my list of mods. :D

Yes, but still many of the HAM setups are not tuned or even checked. It is easy because 2m/70cm isn't as sensitive to a poor setup like CB (11m) or even other low frequency ham bands (10m-12m). 2m/70cm is really great for the "bolt on and go" crowd. I do think that the new "CB" will transition to FRS/GMRS just because of this reason.

    Stuff. Also things.
Is there a particular HT that you HAM nerds recommend for someone looking to try things out?

I don’t have anything against CB, but that might be because I actually got a good tune out of mine and have had no problems making comms. I do like the idea of using APRS down the road as a redundant tracking setup along with my inReach, but I’m clueless as to what is needed to get it up and running.
