Never have and my engine runs smooth. Of course it may be that I am not very entuned into the engine and just drive :notsure:

I run 91. As somebody has already said the ECU will add timing until it sees knock and then back it off until it doesn't. Adding timing increases power, higher octane will allow for a higher resistance to detonation, allowing for a more aggressive timing map. As for gas mileage, the benefit is minuscule.

hiPSI has it figured out. Plus, the variable valve timing allows the engine to take advantage of the increased octane, but it also allows us to use lower rated fuel in our 11.8:1 compression ratio 3.5Ls.

Is the increased fuel cost worth the gain...? That's up to the end-user.

On a personal note, I feel that 91 ethanol free provides as much of an improved driving experience as 93 ethanol has over 87, i.e. 87 ethanol<93 ethanol<91 non-ethanol. But at the end of the day, I cannot justify the cost of either.

    Funny thing about Shell.
They actually seem to sell better quality fuel than some of the other gas stations.
The major brands of gas stations we have here are Shell, Esso (Exxon), and Petro Canada (previously a crown corporation). There are a bunch of smaller brands that are just reselling from those three. Compared to Esso or Petro Canada, Shell fuel (which I also sometimes buy from Canadian Tire) will yield at least 100 km greater range. I ONLY buy 87, and they ALL have alcohol.

Shell is good gas but I would be very surprised if they offer a ethanol free High grade. All the ethanol free's I've seen are no name branded, sold only outside of town like for farmers.

I think by law it has ethanol now. Now for winter/summer they change the amount

Back when I had a Dakota pick up, I filled up with Shell gas...always ran plus in it.

I'd never believe it, but after a few days I actually thought the fuel gauge was broke. It got that better gas mileage.

I'm not seeing that now days thou.

I actually found a station that sells regular ethanol free, it's near a small lake where some people take boats, I like it for my generator and weed whacker

    See my build page!
I mix the blood of a virgin and grain alcohol with a pinch of elf snot and I have seen nothing that leads me to believe it's better than 87.

This what i usually see also. I've heard a lot of rumors about "So and So High grade" not having it but unless you actually see something saying "Ethanol-Free" I don't take an omission of it's declaration to be fact. As I said, I think it's law. They really only sell the good stuff for small engines but withthe extra cost I just don't think they've bothered to pass a law against autos....it's prob. taxed higher.

Dam, and I had a Dakota that required high grade and got shit mileage. That's how I justified owning a Toyota after that. Same shitty mileage, why not 4WD?

When I was stock, I would run any top-tier fuel between 87-89 octane. Truck never gave me issues, and MPG doesn't control my life.

When I added the turbo, I went to 93 octane from Shell, Sunoco, or Valero brands.
Now that I've done a fuel pump and injectors, I mix 93 with E85 and let 'er rip tater chip!

How much is the ethanol free 87 compared to 93 octane w/ ethanol?
