If trailer launching is the only option I would definitely go with a C22 with a swing keel or a CP22 Sport with the swing keel. You may be able to get away with a wing keel but that may make recovery a bit more tricky.

 

Just for the sake of discussion (not argument) the Capri 22 Sport was quickly rebranded Catalina 22 Sport because of the confusion. The CP22 Sport (Now C22 Sport) is the original hull shape and rig dimensions of the original C22 from the 70's. It's a different animal entirely than the CP22, which has always been a more sporty boat then the C22.

In 1986 the original C22 had a wing keel option. The updated C22 MkII also had a wing keel option. As far as I know, the C22 Sport only come with a sing keel.

 

You are correct, I thought that the sport had a Capri hull but it dose actually have the shape of the C22. It is basically a C22 with the topside look of the Capri. Looks like it was made to cater to the guys that didn’t want to restore the C22 but wanted to run One design with them.

My choice for a C22 would be a MKII with wing keel. They have little dinettes and a pop-top.

 

Definitely agree, you’ll get some better pointing and still get the comfort, as long as the launch is deep enough you should be able to get it in and out. The Capri comes with a wing keel although you would lose a lot of the comfort.

I am getting ready to install steering on our old Whaler. What are your thoughts on hydraulic steering verse manual steering on a Classic Sport 15 Boston Whaler.

On something that small I can’t imagine you would need it but I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt.

 

Agreed. Hydro steering would be a luxury on your boat... nice and smooth but unnecessary.

 

Back when Australia beat the U.S in the Americas Cup in 1983, with the first winged keel, everybody and their sister started putting winged keels on all manner of boats. But, they were just slapping a modified "T" on them. They were worthless. When Beneteau starting putting the wings on many of their boats at that time, it just turned them into crap. You had to reef above 10 knots. So tender. I only bring up that brand because I sailed a couple. And spent a week on one in the Caribbean. Garbage. Be careful buying a boat with a winged keel if it's an old boat, for that reason.

Here is the story behind wing keels verse deep keels and centerboards. When Australia II defeated Liberty in the 1983 America's Cup, it was, indeed, the case of a new design defeating an old design. Australia II had a winged keel, and Liberty had a traditional deep keel. The key thing to remember about Australia II's winged keel is that the boat was designed to have a winged keel, which means Australia II was engineered for a winged keel from the drawing board. You can't take a boat that has a traditional style deep keel and fabricate wings for it, and expect it to perform better than it was originally designed to perform. Engineering doesn't work that way.

In order for wing keels to affectively work on sailboat performance, the boat has to be designed for a wing from the sailboat's conception. Wing keels, generally, provide greater stability when pointing upwind and on a beam reach because they don't lose any efficiency as a boat heels. With a traditional keel, a sailboat becomes less efficient as the boat heels. A traditional keel has less water to counter the sailboat, as the boat heels toward the leeward side. A winged keel still has the same amount of surface to counter the hull as it heels because of its wings. The drawback to winged keels is that because they have more surface area to cut through water, as a result, they have more drag.

I’ve heard a lot of the same issues with the Catalina. I have a deep fin keel and I’m good until 20knots and then I have to reef or roll the 155 up a bit. 30knots I’m reefed and a 100 up front. The same boat with a wing keel I’ve heard people reefing at 15knots with a 100 up front

 

I have the manual steering on my 13.5 whaler. It’s got the Worm gear under the wheel with the single cable.( not the old school wire and turning blocks on both sides. Motor is a 40HP 2 stroke.

I like how it steers it’s pretty easy to turn and it doesn’t fight at all. Super easy to maintain not much aside from some grease. If the cable was to fail it’s very cheap to replace. About $100. Easy to turn lock to lock with the power off.

Hydro steering seems to be a bit $$$ but it’s great to drive. On all the boats I’ve been on (used to be iv never had an issue with hydro steer other than o rings. If you already have a cable system I would think about trying a bigger steering wheel first.
