Preferred coating for Sliders?

they'll look like yours in no time. not looking forward to pulling them off next year to re-paint. hopefully can just touch up along the way.

 

You should be fine touching them up on the truck. I live in the salt belt, so I have to take them off the treat the frame anyhow.

Remember, scratched sliders are a sign your truck is used for its intended purpose...lol

 

Looking for a top coat for my sliders. Looking at undercoats, Bed liners (rust oleum). Notices some are "rubberized" Is this the wrong stuff?

 

Rustoleum self etching primer and Bed liner. Multiple coats of each.

 

I’m 6-7 months in with mine after doing this. Expect to recoat regularly. Mine needs touch up already.

 

Same. Minor areas here and there but uber easy.

 

touch up is the key. powder coast is tough to touch up. rubberized stuff is a no no, it will catch on rocks/debris and peel then look like crap. The rusto bed liner is super easy to touch up.

 

I've been looking at clear coat options. I recently bought a set of bare sliders and they already show a bit of rust in the welded sections. Would rather just keep the steel look and not worry about touching them up with black after using them.

A little overkill, no? Much more expensive than some rattecan clear coat. Will still require touch-up after rock contact .

 

Hey now. I thought you were a little to clear coat bare steel so...... black rustoleum bedliner is easy to touch up. Easier than clear coat cause you can see where it's gone from using them. Otherwise you're just guessing.

 

I have had fantastic results with POR-15 on so many things from a boat trailer to painting the frame and both front and rear bumpers on a FJ Cruiser I had.. So I Got my new RCI Sliders in Bare Metal and will POR-15 those also. IF you do the full proper steps with Prep and use the POR-15 Primer it holds up very good and you can touch it up fast and easy if ever needed. Only thing I do Not like about the POR-15 is it certainly Stinks bad because it is an Epoxy type Paint. On the FJ Cruiser I did both front and back bumpers front underside it held up very good.

 

When I get mine I plan on using black steel-it. That stuff is pretty amazing.

 

What I'll never do again...get bare armor. The cost of prep and time to paint it properly is damn near the cost of powder coat.

 

Guys that used the truck bed liner, are you using the liner on the plates that meet the frame?

I didn't. I used rustoleum stop rust black spray paint on the inner side of the plate where it meets the frame.

 

Interesting powder coat story: We bought a set of powder coated name brand outdoor furniture 1.5 years ago from a major retailer. It sat outside, uncovered, one summer, one winter, and one summer. We hardly ever use it. This past fall I noticed the powder coat was flaking off all over, in big chunks. There was a two year warranty. After contacting the manufacturer and a few pictures I received a refund check for almost $700.00, original cost, $840.00. In time, most everything powder coated and sold in the last few years will be in the landfill, rusted out or in need of stripping and refinishing. I sure there are examples of powder coating that will last years in the harshest environments. I have not seen it yet on consumer type items. There was thread here recently about an aftermarket bumper that was peeling and rusting badly within a few months, sad.....

On topic, I would prep properly and paint or POR15. It is better, more durable, and more repairable than powder coat and the rust won't spread under it.

 

I put on about 5 layers of self etching primer. I should have got por 15 then done the primer. If I have issues I'll strip them and do por 15 from the ground up. I'm not terribly worried about the exposed parts rusting due to I can actually see it and get to it. I am worried about where the sliders meet the frame where I cant see it. I'm just wondering ( and hoping ) that i can get the frame to slider area as rust resistant as i can to avoid issues down the line.
