Tailgate theft....How to prevent it....

Today I learned that tailgate theft is a thing. Man, some people...

 

Just read a report from my local police that two Tacoma tailgates were stolen last week. Good thing mines locked! Dang I hate thieves!

 

I was not even aware of locks available to prevent tailgate theft. Thank you tacomaworld.

 

Always make sure mine is locked.

 

I am new to the forum and I can not see when this was posted, are 2019 tail gates are taken the same way?? I just brought mine home today so tomorrow I will take a look. I would be interested in a lock now, Are they after market?

 

Yes as far as I know. If its Unlocked and able to be laid down, its easily take able

 

I am going out to back in so my tail gate is not exposed until I can get some kind of lock, Thanks

 

You should already have one... use the key to lock it up. You should see a key hole next to the handle

 

OK I will check, this is a basic truck and Like I mentioned I just have it home today for the first time, but thanks for the info

 

You have a lock for the tail gate already. The key is probably hidden in the key fob if you have the push to start. If not it's just the ignition key

My bro-in-law said Chevy truck tail gates come off the same way

 

locking latch, tonneau cover strapped to bedcleats, hose clamp mod with gatekeeper stainless bracket over it, cable washer mod = MY TAILGATE!

ACE HW had the nylon washers (.500 x .317 x .125) that seem to fit just about perfectly. I installed some pretty robust (thick) 12mm x 40mm fender washers as the cable clip retainer, but when I fully tightened the torx bolt, it starts to bind up. I think I'll need to run back to a HW store and grab some less robust (thinner) fender washers or double-up the nylon washers to allow everything to work when I fully torque the torx bolt down. ACE also had the EZ lock pipe clamp which works just fine -- I was able to fully tighten this and everything seems to operate just fine. This is on a 2016 3rd gen tacoma.


Update: Not the greatest pic, but shows that only one nylon washer gives just enough space for everything to sit flush. I did end up doubling these up and now the the cable clip retainer moves much more easily when the torx bolt is fully tightened.
