I wonder if there was a bump trying to beat the tariffs/trade war?

That is a great idea, especially to counter the excitement over the new Gladiator and Ranger. It could be the difference that tilts an "on the fence" Tacoma owner back and away from switching.

Are we taking bets? The Fords never have had reliability.

For awhile then quality will smack them in the shorts.

    Thanks!

Esp that these issues cause folks to trade theirs. While I was not that annoyed, the difference was pretty big for me.

Honestly not sure if I should be annoyed, concerned, or what. As a first time truck owner, I have no idea what is problematic and what is just "normal pickup truck" behavior. I do fear that reading this board can result in automotive hypochondria, so I make an effort not to freak out at every little thing. I'm also an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" guy. A suggestion from Toyota to just come on an and get the update, with assurances that if the "fix" creates any new problems, THOSE TOO will be addressed, would be just what the doctor ordered for me.

To be clear, I only notice weird shifting situations when I'm using the cruise control at highway speeds, though my trip Out West back in September driving up, over, and through the Rockies was interesting - but again, not sure if that was this dreaded "stumble condition" or just A Truck Being a Truck.

We shall see. I can already see the YouTube ads....Similar to the ones they already use to attack the Highlander, Rav4 and Tundra.

"Interested in the Toyota Tacoma? Have you considered the Ford Ranger? The Ranger has best-in-class payload, best-in-class towing, best-in-class fuel economy, and best-in-class torque. It even has rear-disc brakes, andriod auto, and a factory-warrantied yakima roof-top-tent."

    seems like an easy sales-pitch.

    Still stock completely capable!
Agree 100% Rangers will sell good for a while but Tacoma people are Tacoma people and will continue to buy the most reliable mid size. Some people will jump ship but a lot of the ship jumpers will come back. Rangers look decent and in theory will be a nice truck. But I know I’ll take tried and proven over theory anyday!

I'm a first timer also and did have a bit of the hypochondria hanging around here. The fact is that it is nearly like a decently modern car, so if it feels out of place at least ask the question.

For me with the MT, the motor just didn't feel right and the TSB totally fixed that.

Do realize that the 3rd Gen Taco is coming up on 4yrs old. If we're spec sheet racing, then the new players have a chance to top it in some categories. The real deal is getting out and driving them to see if it is for real or not.

Myself, it is pretty obvious that none of them have anything to offer me over the Taco. Certainly the gizmo creep in the Ranger is a bit disturbing.

It would be interesting to see real data on this. I’d love to see the internal Toyota slide decks on defect rates and how quality is tracking. It would be interesting to know how many folks are over 150k miles.

OEM roof-top-tent and Rear disc brakes are simply gizmos?

    ??

Electronic gizmos. I'm not a fan.

I would never buy an OEM ground tent, let alone an OEM RTT. The aftermarket does that better.

I am indifferent about the rear brakes. Disks are fine, and the drums on the Taco seem strong.

I think the Ranger's looks leave a little to be desired. It's very bland. I expected a little more from Ford. I bet the engine/tranny combo will feel better than the Taco though for those of you who drive autos.

Funny you say that - in the Gladiator thread that got moved over to "General Automotive", I commented that the Jeep engineers seem to be specifically targeting some common Tacoma World complaints/mods - almost as if they're reading the boards, too.

I bet they're not reading the part of people complaining about paying $40k for a mid size truck. I bet you can easily spec a Gladiator out to over $50k, and the base model will be right around $30k

I enjoy seeing so many new Tacoma's in the streets and I'm not ashamed to say it feels special when I very rarely see my trim TRD OR 4x4 w/ tech 6sp.. I've seen way more Pro's tho

What better place to scout the competition and see what folks might be saying about it? Certainly better than a freaking focus group.

The best package. They didn't even sell them on the east coast in 2016 but I somehow managed to get one ;)

Exactly, focus groups lead to things like Ridgelines...
