Composite bed question

If I drill a couple holes in the bottom of my bed for some new tie down rings in my 2011 Tacoma. Even if I use some big washers on both sides, is there any risk of pulling the tie down rings back through with a composite bed? Not sure how strong these beds are since I'm pretty new to Tacoma's.

 

Toyota sells D-Rings with washers that are made for the composite bed, so I would think your solution would be ok.

Well I guess here goes nothing, I'll post pictures of it all when it is done. I am going to get 4 of these and test them out, if it tests out good I'll probably get 2 or 4 more.

You could, but why not use the bed bolts instead? Already there..

 

If it were me, I'd cut a couple 3"x3" 1/4" steel plates to use as backers to keep the hardware from pulling through.

 

I saw that some people were using the bedbolts to hold the tie downs on but I don't like the location of them for tie down spots. Call me picky but I want them closer to the bed sides.

 

That's doable too but I'd second the idea of backing

 

I purchased a set of those when I got my truck... they are definitely needed in the forward bed. I put mine in the wheel wells. A little over priced, but they are quality...no rust at all after 6 years.

 

i have a couple factory d-rings in the front corners at the bedside. About 2.75" from bed bottom and 2.75" from front bed wall.

Also installed one in the middle drain hole on the bed floor, near front of bed. Keeps my tool box strapped down in the passenger corner.


Hard to tell but in the corners and one in the middle. I use a ratchet strap to go right over the box and pull straight down on either sides.

 

If you add anything to the bed, make sure it is done with a proper backing plate.

 

The factory D-rings come with a 2"x3" backing plate/bolt.

Well the deed is half done, got 2 tie downs installed in the front corners of the bed and I gotta say, I only spent like 14$ to get 4 tie downs ready to be installed.


I made my own backing plates, they are roughly 3"x3" and got some nice M10 button head bolts and some big washers and lock nuts. Here are the pictures I promised. I have 2 installed and 2 more already to go when I finally choose where I want them.

 

How thick are the backing plates?

 

Man, you need to take the shop vac to the underside of that bed mat once in a while.

 

Hahaha yes I do, I'll take the hose to the bed when I clean her next, went out to the desert 3 weeks ago and never deep cleaned it.

They are only 1/16" thick... and the 2 1/2" inch washer is also 1/16"

 

Reviving a thread that’s pretty dead, but hey I need some assistance. I know it’s an M10 button head you used, but what length bolt did you use for this project.

 

OP was last on in January so you may not hear back from him.

The bolts look to be about 1" in the pics he posted.

 

Kind of what I was thinking too. 1” or 1 1/2”s. Thanks for looking when he was last on would have waited for the reply lol

Nice write up. Might have to do that just because tie downs are great.

I was curious to the length of the bolt though because I’m going to drill through the bed of the truck to mount my viair 2.5 gallon tank. Looking for a seamless oem appearance from the top of the bed and I liked the button heads op used.
