Sulli's ego strikes again. Congrats Anaheim, you guys get 1 of our better forward prospects because Coach Sulli doesn't want to put him in a position to succeed.

Not sure you guys actually picked up on what Dubas did with this deal. Nylander wanted his money and he got his 7.5 mil per. Leafs wanted a lower cap and got their 6.96. But the real deal is after this summer if Nylander is not improving to his 6.96 cap hit or better, for the last 5 years hes only owed an average of 4.94 mil. That is disgustingly low for the player he is. For a team who is not a cap team like Carolina, Nylander will be in high demand and this deal is going to bring in a massive return if hes traded.
I dont think Nylander is worth more than 6-6.5 mil myself but I will take 6.96 with the trade security anyday

Yup. I saw that and also the bonus money. Toronto can also trade around the bonus money by trading he player in August bringing the true cost of the player down even lower. Nylander also wins because he collects a big pile of money this year and gets a significant bonus every year before he even touches the puck.

Ya and this makes sense to why Carolina was so interested in him. Dubas was probably quite clear the contract he was offering him. I can see them re looking at it if he doesnt improve because right now he is not a 7 mil player. Should be eventually thoufh

Didn't Dubas put his word out there that he 'would not trade Nylander, for as long as he is GM of the team'? If so, that is quite bold. Quote : William Nylander: “Kyle has told me multiple times that as long as he’s here he’s not going to trade me.” Contractually, he can still do whatever he wants but to put your actual word out there is quite odd. And that dude is not worth anything near 7mil a year, sorry.

@AJH387 I don't think anyone is saying he is a 7 million dollar player today, but the general consensus is that he will be within a couple of years of the start of the contract. These bubble elite young forwards command a premium that the league has been willing to pay. Teams want to avoid a Kucherov type problem where a player actually hits the elite level while under a bridge deal and the team is stuck paying out far more money than they would like to early in the players career. If Nylander gets anywhere close to Pasternak in terms of production then this contract is a steal, especially considering the Draisaitl deal which I consider the case of paying too much too far ahead of time. Considering TO's cap situation, this should leave room to sign Matthews and Marner if the Leafs say goodbye to Jake Gardiner and bring up another young D man. Given how horrid Gardiner has been at give aways, I don't think anyone on the Marlies could be much worse.

As for Dubas, I think we learned that he won't cave. He consistently leaked the message that Nylander was not going to be traded and that he would sign him for under 7 million. He did both those things, though right at the wire and right against his internal cap. A general manager that pulls that off consistently will be successful in this league.

That is fair. I guess I was along the lines of thinking that if they weren't going to do a bridge deal, then 6m on a shorter term would get it done. To some that may still be a bridge deal, but to me still a solid payday for a guy who is , in my opinion, somewhat unproven. I also figured, he is probably like the 5th most important player on Tor. I think Pasternak is a better player, I think Brayden Point is a better player. I think he is more along the lines of a Jake Geuntzal, who I am curious to see what he gets. I would think 5-5.5 get it done, but I could be wrong. But I certainly see what you are saying. I'm not trying to be critical of Dubas, I guess I thought Nylander was crazy for thinking he was going to get 7-8m. And getting just under 7m seemed like the very high end, if Tor was to keep him and still get Marner and Matthews signed.

Which leads to my next question. What do those guys get? I think Matthews get 11 and Marner 9? Or am I way off, here?

I think the Matthews number is bang on. The one that’s up in the air is Marner. Who knows what his ask is since he seems to improve every shift. If you believe the rumours there are GMs who think Marner will be the better player out of the two when they hit their prime. I think 8-10 is a best guess at this point. The good news is that Riley and Kadri are still locked up for a couple of years for 5 or under. Those are the player Toronto got a steal on and too be fair Kadri had even more questions about him than Nylander but became a high level two way forward that is the backbone of the Leafs 5 on 5 play. Riley... might be far better than anticipated.

A few fan polls led by local news or papers have happened and the winners have been the Sockeyes, Steelheads, Metropolitans... respect the tradition but I really don't want the "Mets"

I liked this design a bit because it looked back to the Metropolitans with the S but went a different direction.
