    Loose nut behind the wheel.
Keyword "bear spray" brings out all the hardcore operators. Internet wide phenomenon.

But yes it works on most anything with eyes and a respiratory tract.

What's Bear Spray got to do with Tacoma's?

We thought this was a dumpster thread.

Not to be preachy, but spray is more effective than a firearm in many ways: you don’t need a steady hand to hit the target (adrenaline pumping); you don’t needlessly kill an animal that you should generally be able to out-smart, thereby inviting government bureaucracies into our scarce wild areas; quieter, safer, etc, etc.

Practices like this are however handy ammo for the anti-gunner commies.

You should carry bells, they say that they work well, especially for black bears.

You do know how to tell the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat, right? Black bear scat has berries, bits of bone and fur in it, and grizzly bear scat has bells in it. :rimshot:

Well, perhaps its better to skip the bells and stick to the bear spray...

I did a DIY remote fly-fishing trip in Alaska in August. Well before the trip I called Alaska Fish & Game for tips since I have zero experience with Grizzly bear (only Black Bear here in ME). They recommended Counter Assault as a first line of defense in addition to a 12G pump with Brenneke slugs. Handgun was not recommended. The company that flew us in/out as well as the outfitter that we rented the raft kit from also recommended the same. Fortunately, we never needed to use either. The Wildlife Officer I spoke with said the best deterrent is simply making them aware of your presence as they also want to avoid interaction/confrontation with people. While on foot and while fishing, I must have said "hey bear" loudly 23,978 times over the course of the 12 days on the river. We saw 8 bear on the trip, all when we were in the raft navigating the river and the bear were up on the river bank just hanging out. All looked at as us curiously for a moment and then quicky ran away soon after. Impressive animals when they stand up and check you out. We also brought along some small marine air horns. We used these when we bushwhacked some tributaries.
