If you burn down the woods, no bears. And if you burn down the town no rangers. No problem.

    And quiet.

A really interesting story is where Steven Rinella and crew gets attacked by a Grizzly in Alaska. Luckily nobody was hurt. Wild story can be heard on the Meat Eater Podcast #86 and #87 (The Meat Tree Part 1 and 2). Part 2 is really where the action starts.

They do a good cover of bear sprays, use, and guns.

    Yup.....I'd not want to, either.

Those loads went through a Henry .45/70 I bought a couple years ago. Just recently bought some rings & a 1-4x20mm Leupold for it. I need to get it mounted up and zero'd in soon.

It's a fairly compact rifle due to the shortish 18" barrel. The stock, however is really well designed and makes the recoil actually very mild. I mean, it's not .30/30 mild......but, it's not bad a all.

    Gun is built fairly stout.

Bear spray sounds like a much needed item in such areas.

One of my buddies has taken a few trips out West and has had some amazing hunts for sure. He's taken a massive muley and been in some gorgeous country.

I first laughed when he'd talk about some of the distances shots can be out there.....until I saw some of the pics.

I laughed again when I saw the nasty little revolver he was packing along on the hunts, too....."for bears & cats" he said. I quit laughing when I studied up some on what a hunter may encounter. Better to be packing and not need it....than to need it and not have it.

The hand cannon he bought may have been ideal for the task....but not in my hands. It was a S&W .460 in a 4.5" barrel with the last two inches being all ported. Recoil wasn't really the problem....it was the muzzle blast from the 225gr Hornady FTX load they claimed would reach over 2,000 fps in a 10"+ barrel. Even wearing both earplugs AND hearing muffs the blast from that gun was ridiculous. There is no way it could have been shot....say in an emergency situation....without severe hearing damage. No way to avoid extreme flinching on each shot. It only held 5 rounds, too.

I think he'd been much better served with the bear spray and then whatever hunting rifle he had for back up.

Have you ever shot a 3.5" magnum shell with Triple ought?

Ideally a glock 20 with 10mm bear load and a red dot. Also an M1A with soft points so they don't hurt as much lol.

I cannot cite the exact podcast but a person that had actually done some kinda of stud I dictated that it depends if the bear had been sprayed before.
Went something like 1st time 99% 2nd 80 and if it was the 3rd time they had been sprayed 50%.
No way of knowing if it had been sprayed before.
So there is some food for thought.

Yep, but those little pellets don't penetrate enough to be effective at stopping a bear. You need 3 or 3.5" Brenneke slugs.

Yeah, a friend and I came across a mountain lion kill with the cat still standing over it a month or so ago. We were doing some bushwacking when we stumbled across it, so the distance between us and the cat was about...20 feet on a good day.

He managed to clear the holster and get about halfway through the draw stroke , I was about halfway clear of the holster when the cat had managed to bound twice that distance (thankfully in the opposite direction). Yeah, Out west has a lot bigger issues than the east (except maybe the Maine area...)

DShK is the only weapon that will slow a bear down. Otherwise you’re just *hoping* to persuade it. I go with the Andy Kaufman approach, attempt to read the great gatsby to it. For some reason it’s applauded but really it’s just dog shit bound into a spine.

I heard it. Remi Warren was there too. In that case the guy with the gun didn't have it on him and spray would have been useless in the heavy winds they were in.

I'll keep the glock 20 10mm with buffalo bore hard cast bullets on my side.

Probably but it's just black bears where I'm at. For out west I'm not sure if I'd carry a larger handgun or just take a shotgun with me. It's hard to imagine being able to get my shotgun around and aimed before the bear's on top of me.

Wow, I bet that adrenaline rush lasted the rest of the day! My brother shows me videos from him chasing bears and lions with hounds, and I've never seen anything cover ground faster than a mountain lion after they let it out of the tree. It's mind blowing.

Saving this for later. Kenai makes a good one without the bino pouch as well.

    Loose nut behind the wheel.
That FHF rig is nice but I like HPG Kit Bags better for handgun, binocs, bear spray etc on chest mount. Super versatile.
