I want to fit a 35" spare while keeping mild performance in mind. Thoughts/Ideas?

It can be as heavy as your want, or a lighter cage style. If you have a bed cage and a rack you're most of the way there, but can save weight by getting rid of the bed and the bed sides. It also gives you more options to put gear between the frame rails and tool boxes where your bedsides are now, really changing the distribution of how you pack the truck.

Trade off is the height of the tent.

Could you not rotate it 90 degrees and have the tire parallel to the back of the cab?

Been thinking about something similar but not a fan of how much of the rear window it blocks on my 1st gen

precisely why I went the direction that I did. it blocks less than the rear seat head rest in the position I have it.

For someone running a lower rack and a standard RTT having it in that place would be feasible though

a lower rack won't much allow you to fit the tire standing up period.

This, I keep my tent lower in my best attempt to keep the center of gravity low.

That’s what I’m doing now but it won’t fit with the tent. I’ve already measured.

Gotcha. Forgot the double cab only has a 5 ft bed, I was going off it being 6 foot like mine :) :homer:

huh? how does length of bed matter? are you saying leave a gap at the front of the rack/tent in a longer bed to put a tire in?

Yeah, not the first time in my life I’ve found myself a few inches short...:rimshot:

Kind of how I was understanding it. Would end up balancing out since the weight of the tire would be in an ideal location.

Yeah, I see plenty of bed racks that aren't the full length

Not my pic but for example you could move the rack and tent back a foot to have room for a tire there.

gotcha! I was confused at first like "uh a 6 foot bed and a 5 foot bed are the same height so that doesn't change the 35" tire standing anywhere" lol. my tent also covers my whole bed and some of the cab so I didn't even consider there being a gap..

Just get some runflats and ditch the spare all together. Problem solved

Or depending on how strong your bedrack is, you could mount it to the outside of the rack? Chase truck style IMG_3293.jpg

Forgive me if I didn't see it but did OP even post a picture of their current setup?

Best example I was able to find:
(no spare in this picture, but with the tent on it lays flat on the floor of the bed)
(with the tent off it sits vertically strapped to the front bed rail just behind the cab)

Yeah, but wouldn't it be good for the OP to post a picture of his current setup (ie. rack and tent on truck) if guys are to give him some recommendations?

No, I did not. I ranted a little about a few ideas but didn’t think about posting a pic.

Mike (post above) has been kind enough to provide us with one pic. I do have a full build thread (link in my signature) but I don’t have any pics on my new phone.
