How did OP manage to buy a 2019 TRD OR without 4x4?

Marketing mostly, I imagine....but also in places like the southwest there's not hardly any need for 4wd unless you use it recreationally. We have tons of places to wheel and use 4x4 but never any reason to 'need' it unless you live in the mountains, really.

The locker on the TRD OR 4x2s definitley makes them more capable as 4x2s and believe it or not, I've seen some locked 2wds have less trouble in certain places wheeling than an open diff 4x4. But a locked 4x4 will dance circles around a 2wd any day

A friend of mine bought a Jeep GC from AZ. Flew out there to pick it up. On the drive home, he tried to find the transfer case lever or dial (or whatever they put in them things). Frantically searched. Probably opening up all compartments and turning over floor mats. Wish I had a dash cam footage of his slow horrified realization that 2WD Jeeps do, in fact, exist.

With OP's epic statement "as time goes by" makes me still wonder when he bought it.

LOL that's funny and sad haha. Yeah I sometimes see ads with trucks for sale on here and the owner never puts whether or not it's 2wd or 4x4 in the listing...eventually someone asks and they're like "4x4...duh" as though they had no idea 4x2s existed.

Just funny to me because when I was searching for my Tacoma, finding a 4x4 was like finding a needle in a haystack locally.

If it's a $ decision, and you have the time and skills, by all means convert it yourself. But, keep this in mind, when you go to sell your truck, you will not get 'market' value for it. That might not be a concern now, but you need to be aware that any savings you take on the front end are going to be given up on a sale. Few ppl are going to want to buy a converted 4x2 when the market is flooded with factory 4x4s. If this is a life long vehicle, of course, that is a non-issue. So, from a purely $ standpoint, trade in make sense.

I don’t see how that changes things of the sensors detect wheel speed.

Yep, took me about two months holding out looking for a 2015 4x4 Sport with the 6speed manual. Wanted the color matched shit because I hate chrome, wanted to upgrade from 2WD after about 4 years offroading with a locked 2WD, and wanted the larger diff from the Sport to drop an ARB in.

this is the concern it seems. maybe if you're doing all that work and it's a MT it won't matter cus it's gonna be a one of a kind lifer truck or something. but if you're not sure of the truck's future and may sell it hoping for Toyota resale value, then that may be a consideration, even tho 4x2's have less resale than 4x4's.

Don't take this the wrong way, but most guys I know with 4x4's in SOCAL (San Diego County) never see a day of trails and they just end up with leaking transfer cases because they've never put it into 4LO/4HI. Ever and don't even know how.

No offense taken, Ive seen a lot of those guys myself. I use mine nearly every weekend though, I've got way more miles in 4lo than I do in 4hi lol. That's the one good thing about CA, tons of places to wheel if that's what you wanna do.
