I want to fit a 35" spare while keeping mild performance in mind. Thoughts/Ideas?

Gotcha, so that's your truck in his post? Has anyone suggested mounting your spare to the bottom of the rack below the tent?

My original intention was to start a thread for topic discussion of what people have used or seen used.

In hindsight I probably should post a few pics up so that people can see what I’m working with on my setup.

    Yes, that’s my rig.

Yes, that was mentioned but I only have 25” of room between the bed floor and the bed bar so a 35x12.5” tire would not leave much room for bed space.

I searched my phone and computer and couldn’t find a single pic of my tire mounted w/o the tent. :annoyed:

I 100% get what you're saying about the leverage multiplier of having your tire mounted on a swing out. If you are committed to getting it over the axle I think I'd consider a rack that was a few inches taller and mounting it under the tent. I too would hate having a spare in my bed taking up space.

With the tire inwards, you still lose the bedspace, with it out, it sticks out further than it would on a vertical tire carrier off the bumper. Only really a problem if you do more intense rock crawling where you may be dragging the ass end.

Agreed. To add to that, the amount of tubbing that that gate is built out of would probably make the rear swing out the lighter option.
    For how much!? :puke:

Meh, by the time you need up the swingout to be strong, it will probably weigh about the same. I think my original swingout weighed in around 80lbs before the tire was mounted. That on top of the 130ish lb bumper

Never said it was cheap. Was just pointing out that a prebuilt option exists.

I do what you do, but I built my bedrack as low as I could to clear the tire and my bike seat over the tail gate. Tire stands up, and the tent lines up with the stuff on my roof rack. I would like to make everything lower, but the weight up high hasn't really been a problem. I made the tent as light as possible. This is with a 35 against the front of the bed.

This should be possible with a flat bed.

I'm not a fan of the look, but I didn't see anything on top of the roof rack over the cab. Easy access, out of the way, and max bed space

The look is questionable. But over the cab is a big lift for a 35. I thought about it, but didn't want the high CG or the dead lift to get it up there.

This. I thought about it some time ago and I have the roof rack to do it, but lifting a 100 lbs wheel/tire combo above my head and onto the roof sounds like a good way to slip a disk in the middle of nowhere.

Also very bad for the COG aspect.

On big trips I put my Pelican with tools and a few spare parts/recovery gear up there and that isn’t even very fun to lift up.

One thought I had, that I've been contemplating for myself and would work for you, would be to cut a hole in the front of the bed that the tire could sit vertically in like it does now, just lower.

I fit my 35” spare in a much smaller space by pulling all
The sirbout is it and compressing it down with ratchet straps. Because I really only have like 32” of space.
