East Coast trip out to Moab, what am I in for......

For any and all of you East Coast members out there that have driven out to Moab, what am I looking at as far as the road trip goes....... I did a little Google Maps research, its a little over 2100 miles each way, and a short jaunt of 31 hours....... Anyone who has done the trip from the East side please give your advice, experience, etc..... Thanks!

 

40knoxville-75Lexingtin-64 over to 70..take 70 rest of trip. How my dad and I came back to NC from our trip. Didn’t do Moab but stopped at Arches next door..
It really wasn’t a bad drive back.
Can’t remember time, we stopped once and just wanted to get back. 2 weeks on the road with my dad was enough!!

 

What’s your time frame? I made the trip from New Jersey a few years back. Took two weeks so we went out through Tennessee, night in Nashville then took 40 out most of the way. Stopped at Cadillac ranch near Amarillo tx, explored New Mexico for a day, did 4 corners and newspaper rock then spent 5 days in Moab. On the way home we took 70 to 80 making only a few stops in Colorado

 

My plan was to take a week and a few days of vacation.... 2 days out there, spend some time cruising around and doing some light trails, then 2 days back..... I would be traveling light and just my chick and I......

 

2 days is doable if you take turns driving I’d say. Probably better to plan for 3 though just to be less tiresome. @HolyHandGrenade would know better. He likes to drive straight through for the most part

 

2017 we left NJ at around 1:00 AM Sat Morning and hit Moab at 8:30 PM Sunday night. We stopped for a few hours once. I couldn’t sleep, so we just got back on the road.

This year we left very early Sat morning, drove 27 hours straight, crashed at a buddies place in CO, then drove the rest of the way the following morning.

It’s doable with with two drivers.

 

Nice, so it's doable.... I have driven to Florida a few times at 16-17 hours a pop and been fine..... I think I may just beast mode it and see if with switching off driving duties, how far we can make it without stopping..... thanks guys! I appreciate the insight.....

 

Sooooo.... the big question is....... are you guys going again this coming year? And if so, want any company?

I haven't made that drive, but a few days in Moab is not long enough IMO. My dad and I were there for a week and a half and we still didn't get to do everything we wanted to, but I did drive hells revenge a few times in dads jeep at 15 and fly a plane over Arches National Park. There is just so much to do and so much to see

 

I spent a week out there two years in a row. Just being out there is awesome. You don’t need to do everything in one trip.

This alone was worth the drive



Not to mention the looks on faces when I crested Top Of The World trailer in tow

Agreed, multiple Moab trips are necessary!

 

Have to admit that looks to be the best desert camping in the world.
I can't see Australia topping that

 

That’s awesome guys! Exactly what I’m looking to make the trip for.... and definitely not wanting to do it on one trip.... my plan is to head out the first time to get a feel for it, more an exploratory mission..... then head back out with my two boys (10 and 5) who are my adventure buds and experience it with them as well...... definitely going to be a multi-trip endeavor.....

Looking to make the trip in late spring, or possibly in the fall after summer..... Taking the time now to get the truck ready, collect spare parts, plan the logistics, etc..... But that's great info, thank you!

 

Moab in August = 112 degrees in the daytime, which will test your truck's cooling system and the A/C. It will cool off to 80 degrees at night, which makes for difficult sleeping if you're camping.

Warm temps also bring out the pedal-bikers, who seem to have multiplied in the past 10-15 years.

 

if you wanna beat the crowds......

many many places in Utah to explore other than Moab.....

west about 90 minutes....or so....

 

bring a fishin' pole........

 

Man, youre going to have a good time if you/when you go. I was there this past October and it was amazing. I didnt do any Moab trails but camped at Dead Horse and visited Arches. Amazing...

Thinking of coming back for Canyonlands..
