    What's up with that brake disc in the middle of the rear axle? I notice there's nothing at the wheel, is that thing actually the brake or does it do something else?

    It's probably the brake. Military HMMWV's have the disc brakes mounted where the half shaft exits the diff going to the geared hubs. You stop the half shaft from turning instead of the rotating mass of the tire/wheel.
