Commonly referred to in the plastics industry as "Sink" , plastic molds are actually built oversized so that when the part cools it shrinks down into shape.
When you have a flat surface and you have different features and different thicknesses the plastic will shrink different amounts causing "sink marks".
Some of this "engineered out" in the mold and part design but variations in batches of plastic resins, colorants and process speeds, pressure curves and temps can exaggerate these sink marks as well as a few other variables.

Using glossy stuff like (Yuck) Amour-All will only highlight it even more.

That's not the worst I've seen, but also not the best either. Because of the airbag and some of the supporting features in that area it will be always prone to sink marks.

With a hell of a fight you MAY get a Factory rep to authorize replacement as more of a courtesy maybe.... but it may be more frustration than it's worth. If they did change out the dash, you also run the risk of squeaks, buzzes and rattles as all the plastic clips etc on the modern vehicles don't like being "excersized". Have a look at some other Tacoma's at the dealer and compare how your's looks to theirs in the same lighting and angle.

    Great explanation.

I agree with you, but anytime you wash a light at a very harsh angle across thickness variations, those are going to show up.

The better design is to hide the seams with surface features and details. But then, this is just a truck. I came to understand the function and learned to ignore it.

OP, don't listen to all those dufuses. Under the dashboard, in that area, is a bag of candies. To get it you must smash the truck into a wall.
