I want to fit a 35" spare while keeping mild performance in mind. Thoughts/Ideas?

@YumaTRD and I were actually talking about that late last week. He has a 35" spare that we were playing with and that was one of the spots we discussed. Definitely doable but the tire would have to sit on the passenger side due to the location of the gas tank. I would also have to re-route the exhaust, which isn't really that big of a concern.

I think the major issue was deciding how to remove the tire when loaded up. Definitely not out of the realm of possibility.

That was also a topic we discussed. Could compress the tire a bit being I have OBA to save a little space.

 

Can save you some space if you’re really tight for room.

 

I would recommend whatever you do, be sure to plan for a 37 in the future, you'll likely regret it down the line if you make the holder/design too tight to fit an extra 2 inches of diameter.

 

Airing down would work, but ratcheting it down to 32" would most likely cause a flat spot over time on the wall of the tire. Airing down was mostly for an inch or less of clearance issues.

 

Probably easier for me because I have a DCLB. If you just make the hole a bit wider than the tire, it should be able to flop down flat onto the bed without too much hassle.

Design it for a 35, then an aired down 37 will fit. That was my plan anyway. Though my problem with that is I hate my stupid TPMS that has a sensor in the spare... Guess I gotta just pull that LED.

Pretty sure I already do. And I am putting on 37s too. But last time I checked, we actually use our big ass tires.

I'm just waiting to go big enough that I break something so I can go 5.29 gears and add a front locker. So far all I've got is one snapped front axle. It's sad when a supercharger with supporting mods, 35's and 4.56 gearing isn't good enough. But it does say something about vehicle use.

 

I'm getting ready to jump up from 33s, so might as well go straight to 40s and get ahead of the power curve...

So, a little update on the direction I'm leaning towards. I damaged my RTT on a trail run in the desert and picked up a ground tent for the meantime. Figured it was a good opportunity to try different sleeping platforms out. With the removal of the tent, I now have more vertical room in the bed of the truck.

I'm planning on building a chase rack. Link to SDHQs version below but I have a handful of changes in mind that I want for my build and there's no way I'd spend $1200 on one of these. First being I don't need two spare tires sooooo that'll be changed. After many different options discussed, I got to drive a truck with a chase rack for a week and grew to like it. I can build the rack to have a secure home for all of the necessary equipment that I take on trips while keeping the weight above the axle and closer to the cab. I'll keep the spare tire on the passenger side as well to keep the driver's view open. That's just a pet peeve of mine and would prefer to not obstruct it if possible.

Nope, passenger. Unless you have a good reason to have it on the drivers. The truck I drove has two tires in it and the drivers side tire obstructs your view.

 

I think it may be minimal difference since your wheel wells push the tire closer to center than fully fished to the driver or passenger side, unlike how I have it in my truck. It’s right behind me so it doesn’t effect my mirrors or looking over my shoulder.

 

I mean these will all be parts of the test fitment and mock up. My initial though was that the wheel well would push the tire into the dirver's side view like you mentioned but maybe it won't. Good thing I have a spare tire for mock up. I've not driven your truck and forgot that's how yours is setup. I do know that the truck I drove this week had this exact issue and it was a full size.

 

I'm still thinking about how to deal with this on my 2019. The most elegant solution I've come across is still SCS Vin's custom rear crossmember and spare holder. I'm wondering if it would be possible to add a custom cross member and keep the spare under the bed, just move it back as far as possible to clear the pumpkin at full stuff. I don't know if it's possible, but something I'm going to look into.
