    Anyone run 87 1.04r for a bit then go to 91 1.04r?

Wondering how big a difference it is in power and mpg?

I'm on 87 because my tank is full with them. I flash it yesterday and drove only a very, very short distance. I could not recognize a big different, but how I say, it were a short distance. With the next gas station stop I will fill up the better stuff and reflash.

Power is noticeable and mpgs are better by 1-2 IF you don’t get bad gas or winter fuel. Lost it all when I’d get gas on base or since it’s gotten cold.

I ran 3 tanks of 87 and then switched to 91 and personally i noticed a big difference. I think due to the compression ratio in this engine that it really should run on 91 but they mess with valve timing, etc to get it to work with 87. From my past experience of many modified sports cars i have learned to dumb something down to get it to work with lesser octane usually doesn't work well for drive-ability when compared to the right octane/compression ratio match.

My next blog post was actually going to cover some of this. Because of how the ECU works with controlling ignition. When you use 87 octane in this truck, in bone stock configuration, whenever you're at higher loads you will get worse MPG. The reason is due to how toyota sets up their ignition strategy. It's .."complex" is too simple of a word. And it's all based around efficiency calculations. Anyways the ECU will continually trim for knock and you run pretty crappy advance.

The ECU has a sliding scale of efficiency recording from 0.0 to 1.0 based on advance from MBT. Or retard from MBT.

This is during mid to high load. If you're driving it like a granny everywhere, never dipping into the accelerator it won't make much difference.

Also when I tested towing, I did some towing on stock tune. on 87 octane while towing the amount of engine knock is completely absurd.

This is absurd, but it makes sense. There are so so so many folks on this forum that get into downright arguments about the waste of money premium fuel is in these engines. There is no question, this engine - even without the tune - performs better/smoother with less knock on premium fuel

    I agree, and where I live it's only 20¢ more for 91 then 87

I ran full tank of Shell 93 and full tank of Sunoco 87. No difference in MPG or power

87 Feel more like "engine knock or pumpy road" at 40-45mph and 1100-1200rpm.

A big difference for me is ETC mode, very powerful. Like it.

I run 93 octane exclusively, ever since learning the compression ratio.
When I was still racing... anything over 10.5:1 would cause problems with pump gas.
I understand the Taco motor is 11.8:1.
If I were running a big block Chevy with that much compression... Id be using 110 octane leaded race fuel.
I cant imagine how little timing is permitted in the 3.5 to run 11.8:1 compression on 87 octane fuel.
Would love to put it on race gas or e85 and see how much timing it would take.

same here, ran it stock and run it on 1.03, never had
issues with any knocking or otherwise.

This ignores the fact that the effective compression ratio is variable (by up to ~half, through VVT) and it uses direct injection; which, also allows for higher compression ratios.
