2017 Barcelona Red OR Clear Coat Peeling, or Something Else?

Hey All,

I bought my truck used and noticed the roof seemed to have an issue with the clear coat. It was a hell of a deal, so I purchased anyway. Right now it has 16K miles on it so is this something the dealer might be able to fix under warranty? I don't know the full history of the vehicle, so could this be something besides the clear coat? Thanks for taking a look.

 

Have you tried any products like polishes etc?

 

I haven't, only because I thought it might make it worse.

 

Took it to the Toyota paint and body guy. He said it was most likely from an egg He said insurance should cover, we'll see what happens.

Something corrosive ate through the clear coat, usually its either bird shit or tree sap but could be a # of things. Original owner probably never checked the roof and likely just let whatever was on there bake into the paint.

No easy fix other than repainting the roof, instead I'd just recommend putting on a black vinyl wrap on the roof, looks cool and offers a little protection

 

It might not hurt to see what spot waxing after a good wash would do. Maybe a spray wax or liquid wax could work well. Nothing to lose.

OP - You could probably restore it because it hasn't started flaking off, at least what I can tell from the pics. Damaged clear coat starts peeling off..looks like Saran wrap peeling off. Yours looks like an early stage of cracking.

Interestingly the finish on antique furniture can have something called craquelure which is a "cracking" or "crazing" of the surface. Your pictures remind me of this.

 

Keep us posted on what you try and what seems to work. This would be helpful for possibly a lot of people. Also you could see what a professional detailer can do. They have access to products not available to the general public. Might cost $100 to fix rather than $1,000's.

 

Looks to me to definitely be something "external" as opposed to a bad clear coat. My 16 still looks brand new. 51K miles.

how picky are you? if you want to dyi try a claybar. there are different grades available. or - for once not said in jest - that shit will buff out! probably not 100% but close to it . the vinyl wrap is also another option that does look good.

 

Honestly, I'm not that picky. There is a detailing shop nearby and I'll try to get thier opinion. If there is something they can do, but want too much I'll try something myself. I just don't want paint coming off or rust forming. Other than that, I don't really care what it looks like, as I don't see it very often. Thanks for the suggestions!

 

Looks like bird poop or tree sap that etched itself into the clear. Shouldn't be an issue for a detailer. They would probably sand it down in each area slightly and compound/polish with a DA.

If you want to try to fix it yourself, buy a claybar kit from autozone and see if it comes out.
