I overlooked one small detail about the Ranger... used won’t be an option haha. I’ll be priced out of all the new ones!

I paid $32k for a 18' DCSB OR MT with 5 miles on it and I have seen other members do better then me. $30k for a 2 year old truck with 40k doesn't sound like a good deal but then again I don't know the options on that truck as mine was a base OR.

"The Devil" has it right, the financial aspect might not be the best, good used Taco's tend to be pricey. FWIW I'm totally happy w/ my 17' DCSB OR. One of the reasons I got the Taco instead of one of the twins is because at that time the twins didn't offer a sunroof, I'm not sure if they do now. As others have said; check the seating position; adding the 3/4 risers under the rear mounts of the front seats made it much better for me.

Tuff spot to be in. I would let the dealer fix the stuff that needs fixing and role with the Colorado. Buying a used 2016 Tacoma might come with its own set of issues, at least you are getting the colorado's issues addressed.

The current gen Tacoma seems to have some design tradeoffs as well as a few bugs, though by now most are well understood. My 2106 TRD OR has over 50K miles on it now, a few issues fixed by dealer (trans TSB, crank position sensor recall, and trip meter reset TSB). At worst these were minor annoyances, which I had taken care of because it was easy and free; the truck never had driveabiliy issues let alone any failures, and it has been comfortable, capable off road, and reliable. I drove a diesel Colorado and found the interior different, not really better or worse for comfort, ergonomics, style. Diesel was nice obviously! Unless you get a lemon you shouldn’t be disappointed in a Taco.

No, Tech package is sonar sensors and BSM. You need Premium package to get sunroof and leather.

There are a metric buttload of Colorado members on this site.

I would just link up with them and do some testing for yourself off-road. Plenty of men & women want to go play.

At 29k, you are not far away from a new TRD Offroad.
I paid $34,900 for my 2018 doublecab longbed at the end of October.

You will get a better interest rate buying new vs used also.

I just sold a 2015 GMC Sierra AllTerrain I had special ordered for my new 19 Tacoma that I special ordered. I would never go back. So far I am loving my Tacoma. Had a 2005 Tacoma I traded for the GMC and always regretted it. GMC was in the dealer 20 times in 2 years for tsb's and recalls. Good friend of mine bought a 2017 Canyon over a Tacoma because it came with a ton of bells and whistles. He hates it and feels he made a big mistake. Transmission in that thing hunts like no tomorrow. Smell of antifreeze all the time and trips to dealer more than not

Damn. Sounds like your friends is worse than mine. Also sounds like you had some pretty bad luck with that Sierra.

I’m worried that will be the road I’m headed, but hopefully not.

Not that you have to justify wanting a pickup in a, you know, pickup forum. Not sure why some folks here try to dissuade people from one...

Anyhow, back in ‘15 I was only looking at the Chevy twins, the Tacoma and Frontier. Ended up rejecting Chevy for not giving me the transmission and engine I wanted (MT V6) and the Frontier was too dated for my taste. Almost 3 years in now and I’d say it’s the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Normally I find Toyota too boring and conservative but man I love what they did on this truck.

    Good luck!

I love me some Tacos. Bought my TRD Sport 4X4 new in 2016, and have had no issues.4641BCA1-941F-4853-ABCC-B7A48231FA90.jpg

2nd gen>3rd gen. Yea 3rd gen has more hp, but it’s not where you want it or need it, kinda useless having to rev it out to get anywhere in a truck. Tech, looks and creature comforts 3rd > 2nd gen. Definitely test drive both.

With a Tacoma, you won't save an appreciable amount of money going 30K miles used. Top resale vehicle...they have to have 100K+ mi before significant savings.

Issues you will can have with a Tacoma being a sensitive owner.

    • Whining rear diff. This isn't a reliability issue, just an annoyance. Very common though.
    • AT owners report anything from 'Something to get use to' to 'I want to drive this POS off a cliff'. It is way overgeared in 6th, and at high speeds may need to cruise in 5th. There are 3 or 4 software improvements that have made things better.
    • Modest low end engine torque, and a less than refined power band with dips and surges.
    • Possibly some minor driveline or pedal vibrations.
    • infrequent reports of squeaky rear springs and front end clunks due to body mounts.
So anyway, not without issues. I have had a few of the above, but mostly gotten use to them (whining diff, driveline vibrations, modest low end torque). Some owners insist that the dealer fix these, with several trips to the service department and varying results and frustrations. Others just get use to them and enjoy an otherwise good mid-sized truck.

I had two Rangers ‘00 and ‘03. Oil changes, brakes and regular maintenance interval items is all I spent on them. Loved them both dearly. Traded the ‘03 in for a shiny new Taco in ‘16.

I’ve had the trans gear shifting/searching issue and diff howl/whine issue. The dealer did TSB updates on both that didn’t cost me anything. That has reduced but not cured the issues. You have to be a little aggressive with the gas pedal and it holds a gear better. I think some on here are happiest when complaining.

I love my Taco. We're gonna be together for a long time.
