I even told him they are sandblasted, coming in taped and separated and he still was like ehhhhhh.

Going to vatozone and doing this.

 

If your using pads that dust alot, its not worth it imo. I have Akebono ceramics and love them. But even the oem pads created a good amount of dust. Just a heads up.

Powdercoated calipers are nice and all but IMO unless you're going for show it's a waste of money. Even caliper paint is a waste of money. High temp paint works perfectly fine.

 

word, I really don't mind how the dust affects them. I don't plan on keeping this set up long.

 

I took it off my 92 pickup. My homemade factory brush guard knock off wouldn't allow it.

 

Speaking of tow hooks there was a thread on here talking about how the factory hooks are a high risk for failure during recoveries, and they should be upgraded with the ARB recovery point or similar. This was in the 2nd/3rd gen section though. Are our tow hooks not suitable for recoveries? I've gotten winched with mine a few times and not had any issue but if they are prone to failure I'd rather swap it out for something more beefy.

 

The grill paint and the ceramic brake paint were the same price at my autozone. The ceramic paint is definetly thicker, it made my pitted drums look like new.

 

Or a spare steel girder to fuck up those pedestrians real good....


Also I got my flywheel back, grind job looks excellent but I'll check run-out myself to confirm. Dudes shop looks first rate though

 

They are a tow hook, not a recovery point. I'm totally fine with them for something static like winching, but I wouldn't use a recovery strap on them or they'd get ripped off pretty easy

 

Damn I've been pretty lucky then I guess. I usually use my tow hitch with a receiver/shackle if I can but I've used the tow hook a number of times.

 

They're cast iron, brittle, dynamic and shock loads are a no-no. Slow or static loads are fine. It isn't there to yank on.

 

Makes sense, I've never used it as a snatch recovery point just a slow and steady winch load. Probably why it hasn't become a projectile yet. Gonna look into upgrading it anyhow since it's my only front recovery point

 

Same, I have a receiver shackle and it's put up with a lot of my bullshit, I've been winched out by my front points but never pulled anything with them, and wouldn't unless it was an emergency

 

I didn't even think about it till now but my trail gear pumper has a receiver so I can put a shackle in it too

 

I've hooked my strap to another Tacoma's front tow hook on a few occasions where the person behind me got stuck, so I guess I'll try to avoid that in the future...although in most of those scenarios, that tow hook was the only front recovery point on the vehicle so I don't know what our other options would be

 

yea I need to get a front bumper with a rated recovery point(s). I've heard the ARB bumper doesn't have them because it's linked to the airbag sensors and pulling on it can set the airbags off, lol. That would suck.

 

Yeah, when it's the only option, I'd just be as gentle as possible, or if it's an option and they are behind you, strap to them then winch yourself forward to get them out. As ghetto as that sounds lol
