Update:. I installed the eBay grill a couple of months ago and got the 'clean the radar' message right away. However, after a couple of months of driving, the radar has recalibrated itself and works flawlessly. And, I didn't have to get the weird looking garnish. YMMV

Well after I got my TRD Pro grille install, waited about 2 weeks and everything works perfect now, Now I have a New sensor I got that is not needed and would like to sell it to someone who might need one to use on their new grill. Paid 59 bucks it and will sell it for the same price and ship it to the lower 48 states. Hit me up if anyone of you need this. Thanks!

It blows my mind that people will put these cheap Chinese knockoff grilles in their $40k trucks to save $100. Then they Jerry rig the TSS sensor, the part that controls the PRE-COLLISION BRAKING, behind a solid piece of plastic because it’s not the correct design, and then finish it up by telling themselves that it magically recalibrates all by itself! Wow!

Buying an aftermarket TRD Pro grille is not much different than buying generic prescription drugs. It’s all plastic molding, except the aftermarket grille costs less than the OEM grille and “may” have some cosmetic sacrifices. Numerous owners have installed the aftermarket grille and OEM garnish without TSS issues. As a reminder, TSS functions can be disabled by owners and many have chosen to do so regardless of the grille installed on their Tacomas.

The fact that the aftermarket grille may or may not have some cosmetic differences is the least of my concerns, it's all about the TSS sensor that people don't install properly and then spread complete misinformation about it "working fine" and it "re-calibrating itself". This bull shit is going to get someone hurt one day when they put some cheap crappy Chinese grille in their truck that doesn't have correct provisions for the TSS sensor, but they'll put it in anyways because Joe Schmo on Tacomaworld said it "works fine", then that person is going to get in an accident that could have been very well prevented by the pre-collision braking feature. It is your vehicle after all and you can do whatever the heck you want to it, I really don't care, what I care about is the misinformation.

If you have a better explanation, I'd love to hear it. I've made no adjustments to it since install. Both the pre-collision braking and adaptive cruise are working correctly now.
Like I said, auto-calibration (as mentioned by others on TW) is the most likely scenario, but I'm open to other theories if you have one.

Not all Chinese grilles are created equal. Some do in fact have the correct provisions and the OEM sensor and garnish attach just like the OEM grill. I bought my chinese grill before the 18 pro grill was available and have been contemplating swapping it out for a OEM grille now that they are available.

It needs no explanation, it simply does not re-calibrate by itself. Yes it may work good enough, but it's not working as efficiently or as it was designed. Don't believe me? Just swing by your local dealership and ask a tech, there's usually only one or two techs at the dealer who are even trained in re-calibrating that sensor. Ask them what it costs too, it's usually about 1-1.5 labor hours. Some dealerships may not even do it because it's not as simple as implementing TRD Pro specs either since the Pro sits about 1 inch higher in the front.

TT005 : The pre-collision function can not be disabled, unless you just disconnect the sensor. Adaptive cruise control can be disabled via steering wheel control. I also agree with Redline in the safety factor. Numerous post on TacomaWorld from dealership comments and actual toyota certified repair work videos, indicate the sensor needs to be recalibrated , even if just removing and reapplying a bumper with no changes! I myself have installed the Pro grille for looks and am not dependent on the sensor. I'd prefer a vehicle without the extra gadgets that can go wrong, however it was a requirement for the premium package.

I’m curious to know what provisions you’re referring to. The grille simply has a detachable component that allows for replacement with the OEM garnish. It’s the same setup as the OEM Pro grille.

Yes I know lol, I'm not talking about the exceptions. I'm talking about the countless people in this thread that bought a non-TSS TRD Pro grille and dremeled, glued, rived, or otherwise screwed it together, then don't even install the correct garnish piece. Or worse yet, they just bolt it to the back of the grille without any modifications at all, and don't even have a uniform surface in front of the sensor!

Actually, it does need explanation. Perhaps I'm dense, but if it gave me the 'clean your sensor' warning for 2 months, and now it doesn't, then it would appear that something has changed. The truck correctly adjusts speed to the traffic in front of me and displays the pre-collision warning.

Any thoughts? I'd be glad to hear an alternate explanation.

I apologize for the hostility if it's coming across that way, but I just can't stand misinformation, especially when it's related to a safety feature. I just imagine someone with a baby seat in the back, looks down at their phone for a quick second, stares at some hot chick walking down the road, or any number of other reasons they could become distracted, then someone cuts them off and BAM! You have an accident that was preventable to begin with had the driver not been distracted, but the safety feature that could have prevented the accident didn't work properly because someone told them it re-calibrates itself.

Redline870, I agree completely about the safety and misinformation. All I can do is to report on the data points I have and hypothesize about them. If more data can be collected, a better hypothesis and be put forth. Until then, we do the best with what we have.

Then call your dealer, I'm not a certified Toyota technician and I'm not certified to re-calibrate the sensor, so I'm not going to spread misinformation. I know when referring to other types of radar like Lidar, the location of a sensor on the X,Y, and Z axis needs to be very specifically measured and calibrated for accurate readings.
