Higher elevation can run lower octane...I'm not saying I would run a 91 tune on 85 octane, but if
he is running tool to look for detonation he'll know if it's a problem or not.

Yes I know elevation plays into this. Running the 87 tune on 85 would be acceptable at altitude but 91 tune on 85 sounds like a bad idea. oh well not my truck...

Can anyone comment on the mpg for the 87 tune? I see 2-3mpg for the 91, but I don't get 91 where I live, only 93 and 93 is $0.40 more per gallon so it would negate any money savings.

exactly, in my area Tuscaloosa AL is only 87 or 93, sometimes 89 available, but not 91. The price starts at 1.95 / 2.24 / 2.55. Maybe I can mix 89 and 93?

I had pretty good results with 91 in terms of mpg but the difference in cost was still higher than running 87. I switched to 87 and the mgs dropped but I didn't notice any difference in how the truck drives. I used a 1.04 91 tune then switched to 1.04 87 tune.

So basically no noticeable mpg gain over stock, but it has all the driveability improvements?

Yeah one thing I love is the throttle response. The auto transmission still dances around on the highway. This tune makes this truck much more lively when you press that pedal. Before if I stepped on it the truck would cut the fuel and do all sorts of weirdness, now it just hauls.

lol this is exactly why the MT guys leaned hard on Mat in the very beginning of the alpha days. in a MT if you get all this weirdness then you kinda can't hardly drive the thing. which is exactly what we all experienced with those early ECU calibrations. and yeah, now it just hauls with great throttle response.

I do see the 2-3 mpg difference with 91. However, where I am 91 octane is only $0.20 more than 87. So for me it pencils.

There's an Android app called Octane+ I used when mixing different octane to get what I wanted.

I had the 1.04 and just had my 25k service and got the TSB. Transmission shifts a hell of a lot better now but the throttle lag is back and my tune is gone. I am in the middle of moving from CA to ID so I have to wait until I get up there to re flash it with the 1.04R. Hoping the 1.05 is released by then. Anyone have a ETA on the release? It gets hard to keep up on this thread sometimes lol

He stopped giving ETAs but I'm not expecting to see it until after the first of the year. He says he is pretty much shutting down until after the first of the year, IIRC. (which is fine) Plus he has the spare engine to play with now too.

If 1.05 doesn't release before my next service is due then I will ask for the TSB and then load 1.04r as many people have mentioned that it improves shifting.

He inferred on FB that he was hoping to have it out before they go on holiday break. This was by 12/19. Reality may differ

As others have speculated, it could leave a lot of people hanging if they have issues with the install/release. I'm doubting he'd put himself (and customers) in that situation.

Oh yeah, that makes sense. I didn't think of that either.

Luckily I've become more patient over the last few years lol

luckily after Mats last last post telling people to stop asking it has been pretty nice in here. Nobody bothers him and Mats posts are more upbeat and not like he is trying to defend himself. A lot nicer to read the hey look at the cool shit I am working on for you, then the BS when people question his business practices and get PayPal involved.

Hey All, I haven’t been on here for a while, but I sold my 2017 TRD Off-Road a few months ago.

I have an OVTune Dongle kit available for sale. PM me if interested. $275 shipped.

@OVTune If I had to guess I’d wager all of the transmission nonsense is in an effort to either improve emissions, somehow improve gas mileage, or both. Since the latest TSB I have had no issues with the way my truck drives, but hearing how Toyota programmed the transmission definitely makes how it drives make a lot more sense.

Is there a way to track the ECU’s efficiency scale from MBT with an OBD2 reader? I assume a value of 0.5 is ideal?
