What are some tried and true exhaust upgrades for the 3.5? I’m looking for performance increases in all areas but with priority being mpg gains if possible. Also I like a quiet exhaust.

Not to splash your party but it's highly unlikely you'll see any mpg increase with a different exhaust setup.

The potato mod is quiet and gives great gas mileage, it’s really the only one that can do both.

Your best bet will probabaly be the dirty deeds exhaust. It’s costly but as in most things you get what you pay for. I wish I had the funds for one but it will have to wait.

Maybe I’m just totally clueless about modern engines. My 22R’s always picked up a noticeable mpg gain with an exhaust replacement. Same with the 3.0 4Runner I had.

Sorry. These engines are already tuned to the nth degree for efficiency. Truly the only thing you can do to increase mpg is to lighten ( remove back seats, carpets, etc) the vehicle, put light trims with skinny small light summer tread tires. Then change your driving habits. Don't go over 65 mph. Accelerate slowly and coast to stops as much as possible.
If you do what I said above, you can pick up 4 mpg easy.
If you want to keep the weight, run rough tread tires and drive normally? Nothing you can do but enjoy the mpg you get.

the next exhaust mod I will do will be to cut the exhaust right after the axle

Or before the axle and just stick on a down tube

    Which one? :)

JK- I cut mine with a sawzall right after the last hanger and put a slightly downturned spout tip on it. Works great.
