Hankook Dynapro HT in snow?

anybody drove in snow with their stock hankook dynapro HT tires? I have the 2.7 auto 4x4 and I’m gonna be driving on i5 from CA to WA, (through Shasta, siskiyous, and grants pass) in December. We should definitely have snow on the roads. My tires have just under 10k on them.

Think they’ll be ok in the snow? Who’s had experience driving in the snow with the Hankook Dynapro HT? Are they snow worthy? Yes I know they won’t be like a dedicated snow tire, but I just want to know if they will get me up north safely

 

I think these are the same tire that came stock on my 2014 F150 company truck and they did fine in snow and ice.

Drove ~55k on my first set, picked up an almost new set from another guy on here, plan on running them out as well. They’re not snow tires, but slow down when you need to, and realize that discretion is the better part of valor.

 

You may want to consider taking chains for the snow. Oregon tends to be strict about if you don't have the snowflake symbol on the tire. I've seen them set up checkpoints on the freeway, making everyone slow down enough to see if you're properly equipped.

 

I’ve done the drive probably a hundred times and I’ve never seen a check point in the winter. I’ve usuallt drove front wheel vehicles with chains.

Do you think with these tires I will need the chains to assist in snow driving, or just to have a set of chains in my truck so if they ask I have them? Still, I think I’ve drove the last 7/7 (maybe 6/7)christmases in a row up to WA and never saw a checkpoint.

 

Had them on my 2016 F-150, it's the standard tire from the factory ... Like any all season tire, just drive safely and you should be fine. Having some chains on hand won't hurt though

 

I've seen the checkpoints when the pass has snow and ice. Sometimes, they will simply close the freeway during the evening hours.

 

Maybe it’s my timing. I usually leave the Bay Area at 4am which puts me to Shasta around 7am, siskiyous around 9am, grants pass around 10am, etc.

Maybe I’ve just been lucky. Seeing as it’s the first time I’ll drive this baby in the snow, and the uncertainty about the tires ability in the snow, ill keep some chains. Both for my comfort, and to keep ODOT off my rear end

 

I have the dynapro ht on my truck. But I figured better safe than sorry and got Hankook ipike winter's. Once you drive on snow tires in the winter, nobody goes back to all seasons for the winter. Scientific fact. Nothing beats winter tires.

 

So have you ever tried them in the snow?
It’s never like a back east snow when I’m in Washington & Oregon but it definitely gets inches. I’m hoping my Dynapro HTs will be okay

I drove on a little bit of snow in our first storm and it was ok. Just didn't have enough grip to make me feel safe. Definitely slid when turning onto side roads and the highway. But didn't have issues when I was going straight. I did do a stop test and hit my brakes hard going 30 downhill and then I did it in the same place when I got snow tires put on. There is a huge difference in stopping and turning with snow tires. But I have a friend with 2012 trd off-road with almost bald bfgoodrich at and he says he has no problems....until a car slams thier brakes or a pedestrian walks in front of him then maybe he will listen to me about snow tires lol. I say better safe than sorry. But if money is short, give extra space and slow down and you'll be fine.

 

Money isn’t really the issue right now, it’s time lol. Leaving in 2 weeks!

 

Plenty of time! Just out of curiosity,have you put winter tires on your vehicles in the past?

 

No I never have. I remember my other cars did fine in the snow and they were front wheel drive even with no chains but I always worry before the drive. I’m sure with the 4x4 and the new (stock) tires I’ll be alright, I just will have to take it easy

 

It's like night and day personally. If you do decide to do it. You won't regret it. But you'll be fine I'm sure. Safe travels! Drive fast take chances!

 

If you had to choose, what would be a good year round tire I could use that would be good in snow, that I can keep on the truck year round

I only had the stock Hankooks on for the very first part of winter up here but they seemed to have acceptable snow traction. They’ll be fine.

For a better in winter all-season as mentioned find a tire with the mountain-snowflake symbol. I’m running Cooper AT3 4S and they’re great, more or less comparable to a budget winter tire. Others here like the Falken AT3W, and for a highway tire there’s the Kuhmo HT51.
