Reasonable Expectations on a Tacoma's Lifespan

    My old boss from a Chevron Jobber said the oil at the time (10W-30) flowed faster than 10W-40, thus removing heat from parts, now we're talking 0W-20. My old pre-Tacoma '93, 4X2 had 270k when I sold it. Leaking oil from the seals, but only needed a starter, horn and exhaust in all those years. Guy who bought it asked how many times I had replaced the clutch, told him never. He was surprised.

    I believe hey hold their value because visually they hold their style, they last so long, they last so long requiring little repair relative to other vehicles, and they are worth it to fix it because the fixes are few and far between.

    The longest I have ever kept a TOYOTA (truck) was 16 years, with over 300k miles on the clock and no leaks of any kind. I sold it fully road worthy for good money and was used for another 6-8 years before I lost track of its whereabouts.

    The 2nd longest was a 13 yr old T4R with almost 200k miles in mint, got top trade for it also.

    This 3rd Gen Tacoma will most likely not see anywhere near that in my hands before I get a new vehicle, not because it may not last, but because I may get the bug for something else and hand this one to one of my youngest family member for them to go offroad places.

    But there will be a TOYOTA in my driveway that won't let me down from what I can see so far.

    It's not mentioned anywhere anymore by most manufacturers that I know. However, the basic pcv system working principles are still the same, and some of us are still old school and practice tried and true maintenance habits.

    But we're dinosaurs, scheduled for extinction lol!

    I have a 1983 Tacoma that has had water up to the wind shield and rolled twice as well as a tree fallen on it. Still runs fine even with holes in the floor board. Also came out of park once and rolled down a hill smashing into a tree.

    All the vehicles I have owned were 10-40 years old, and the one with least amount of miles had 90k all the way up to 223k (two were yotas). The only reason I bought this truck new was to see how long it could last … I hope it will be a long long life span, and for those who decide to keep them as well.

    Im with others, 300K easy with normal maintenance. One thing people often overlook and that can cause headaches down the road is to flush the brake fluid every 3-4 years. It will absorb moisture and begin to corrode the cylinders, calipers, and lines. One good thing is that you can visually inspect the fluid. It starts out nearly clear, and after a few years turns amber and more cloudy. If it looks like engine oil, its past time to change. Think of it just like piss (lol....seriously), if it gets dark amber, get some new fluids in ASAP!

    There is a member here who already has 200k on his third gen. When asked if he had regrets he said it was the best truck he had ever owned.

    I have no idea how long these 3rd gens will go.

    My 97 Dakota bought brand new went 19 years/200k miles without any major problems, so expect at least that from the Taco.



    New to internet forums, but from my limited TW experience, I think the truth about the 3rd gens is finally starting to shake out.

    This is a nice solid little truck, and is also the best truck I have ever owned.

    Was never sure about all the naysayers here bashing on this 3rd gen Tacoma, but it certainly has quieted down as of late.

    Good luck OP @gurneyeagle, I bought my 2016 thinking it would be my last truck.

    TW membership will certainly help us all in the future making them last for as long as we want them to, imo.

    I will say compared to the 3rd gen's roll out in late 2015-2016, it seems like Toyota has iron out a lot of the early issues and has a handle on the Taco. But that goes for any automaker. The first few years of any new model could be rough.

    For the record, my 2016 was built in October 2015 and has been flawless.......fwiw

    And believe it or not, from what I read during my early days to now on TW, many of the members bashing on the 3rd gen never owned one.......kinda surprised?

    Thought so....

    Just like everyone else has stated, it will last and maintain great value as long as you take care of it.

    For reference; I just totaled my 2008 Off Road double cab, it had 117k miles on it. It spent time in MT, WA, NJ and even HI. Never had an issue other then normal wear and tear. All said and done, this 10 year old vehicle still got an 18k settlement. More then most trucks out there, a Tacoma is an investment.

    The challenge after 300K miles is metallurgical more than anything. Fatigue of components. Everything produced by man has a finite life.

    They will last as long as the owner takes care of them. At least 300k miles, maybe more.

    I don't own one, but I did have a bad test drive with a brand new 2016. It had the reverse-to-drive delay. Toyota later came out with TSB for affected models with the issue. Some people just get turned off by the test drive alone. They aren't owners
