So I have a 2017 tacoma off road... and on really rainy days when the roads are slick, I tend to put it in 4high and drive it like that.
Only done it a couple times cause I recently got the truck but I notice that when I turn, it tightens up obviously because its not a AWD so it wasn't really meant for that, but I do like that it feels more stable while all 4 are going.
My question is... am I doing damage to the truck by driving it like that at highway speeds or on the street with 4x4? what do you suggest

No damage as long as its slippery when wet

    Cheers!

Unless you have the wheel cut all the way and it’s binding and you try to drive in circles you’re not going to hurt anything

As long as the road allows for tire slip... otherwise save some $$ for repair:

It won't cause immediate failure, but I'm trying to imagine situations where there would be any benefit to running 4x4 on a wet road. Starting from a standstill, sure. Stopping distance, maybe.

Other than that, I'd think 4x4 would be a detriment because, unlike an AWD system, the 4x4 system MUST slip, thus causing the tires to loose traction that they already had in cornering maneuvers. Good tires and good weight distribution are what matters on wet roads.

I once had an old Toyota truck with seized front brake calipers. Until I fixed the front brakes, I ran 4x4 on wet roads because the 4x4 drive system would transfer braking power to the front wheels. Not a typical situation though.

So it is really the turning, that causes the damage? And hmm, you don't think that the truck gets better traction, safer on a raining highway with 4wd compared to 2?

According to the owners manual which was written with the knowledge of the people who designed the truck...don't. Do what you want.

    On dry roads, yes.

Convince me :p. I'm here to learn.

If you can feel the binding, then there isn’t enough slippage, meaning you will damage parts and wear them out prematurely.

Please don't show that picture as meaning anything. When it was posted, it was a misused box out of a Jeep that had driven in 4WD on dry roads for almost 700 miles.
Geez. There is one pic of a broke box on the internet. This is it.

If you need 4wd when it’s raining you are either a terrible driver or too paranoid about “slick” roads.

Slow down and don’t drive like an idiot when it rains, pretty simple solution.

I had a used 76 Cherokee that the case did exactly that. The PO used the 4hi as the OP stated here.

The chain had shredded and when I put it in reverse it bound up and broke the case. Ended up getting a replacement from a junkyard.

The point was stated above, 4hi is NOT the same as AWD.

I guess I don't see why you would. If you have reasonable tires you won't have problems driving on wet roads in 2 wheel drive.

In Las Vegas it is rare for it to rain. Most of the year the roads collect oils and trash. When it finally rains the roads become ridiculously slick. Spin when taking off, back end slides around the front at turns, and wrecks everywhere.
I drop it in 4 hi and it works great especially for evasive maneuvers from other drivers.
Just have to disengage before turning to park.
