    Hi all,

2018 TRD OR, with 8000 miles. I pulled out the oil dipstick today and noticed a bunch of metal shavings on the tip of it. Of course I wiped it off before taking a picture of that instance. I put the dipstick back in and pulled out again and more shavings collected on it. Just curious if this is a common thing or something to be worried about.

Any part of the tip of the dip stick razor sharp to the point the tip of the stick it’s self is shaving metal from the tub when you push the stick in?

I would take that to the dealer for sure.

It definitely scrapes while going back in but not sure if its enough to make this happen. Possible though ?

at 8000 miles you've still haven't had your first oil change it could be the engine break in doing it, doesn't hurt to ask the dealership service dept and make a claim

It could be normal...you're still on the original oil right? Might be part of the break in. I would probably run to the dealer and ask sometime

Can't say I remember any metal stuck to my dipstick, but I did have a lot of metal specs in the bottom of the filter housing during the first oil change (5000mi).
I'd take the photo to the dealer at your next service and ask if they can check for an abnormal amount of metal shavings in the filter housing.

when in doubt make a claim/inform the dealership, if it so happens to cause a problem later on even after warranty you got a leg to stand on, its more likely the engine breakin

Stone the shap edges off the stick tip. Clean it. Insert it and see if the shavings disappear. If your oil filter cartridge has shavings you have concerns.

wait till you change out the differential oils, your going to be shocked at the amount on shavings and metal sediments from the rear gears breaking in, I would recommend doing an initial 30k miles gear oil change(severe duty) as opposed to waiting till 60k miles I think for normal use.

Do you guys think it's worth having the oil changed now at 8K miles as opposed to waiting until 10K?

Make sure you ask to see the filter cartridge before they clean it up during first oil change. A small amount of shavings as the bottom of the cartridge housing is normal and will clear up after the first change. A thick sludgey layer at the bottom would be very worrisome.

I've never seen shavings on my dip stick.

Like others have said, round off the edges of the tip of the stick. I has to snake around quite a bit to get in to the sump. Hopefully, and most likley you are shaving the inside of the soft tube.

I don't think the dealer will change your oil for free at 8000 if you're not close to the 12 month time frame. (Maybe they would do it early if you ask about the dipstick...?) I supposed if they won't, you could just pay for an extra oil change to put your mind at ease.

Anyone take a photo of the metal shavings in their filter housing during the first oil change???
I wish I would have and the OP could have used for comparison.

I would definitely change the oil and filter. You will be able to see how much shows up in the filter and on the drain plug. My 2017 had -0- shavings.

agree. have the dealer do it and make them strain the oil that they drain. combined with Xena1 says will tell the tail. take them your pic's. being you wiped it off then checked it again and more metal flakes showed up i would be concerned.
