I don't disagree, however, the way I beat through bushes, or at least used to, and climbing in and out of tree stands they get abused. It doesn't effect how they shoot, wooden stock, but i just hate scratching up pretty wood

how often do you shoot in different environments? I travel frequently enough in climate and elevation and humidity that they will change. You dont need to have a syn sstock, but it removes the necessity to re zero if you do travel.

Oh I feel ya on that one. There are some of mine that are just too pretty to shoot. My dad made me a stock set for my SxS 12 ga. I won't take that thing into the brush. He used a gorgeous chunk of walnut oh man is it sexy.

This is another reason I started looking at synthetic. I have a 700adl I bought when stationed in CO. I hunted all dat in the rain one time and all of a sudden the rifle shot like dog crap through a slingshot. When I broke it down I found the whole bed had swollen and the finish was ruined. I stripped the stock and floated it and it shot fine again, but it happenned. Am I saying they will all do that? Absolutely not. It just happenned to me this time.

I shoot anywhere from 15k-20k+ rnds a yr in everything from 100+ dry temps to freezing and snowing. I don't have to re-zero my wood stocks nor do I have to re-zero my chassis guns, fiberglass stock guns, or syn stock guns. I have different guns for different applications like Chris said they are tools ea. one has it's purpose. I do however check my zero after a long trip as that is just good practice. Everything I own has been out of zero a time or 2 not because of the stock necessarily but the scope could of gotten knocked out as well.

Ive heard it happening enough that I just removed wood from the equation.

But let me be honest here, nothing is sexier to me on a bolt gun then a nice wooden, classic stock.

First thing I do is take the gun apart and free float the barrel better then seal the inside of the stock as the factory never does this. Hence I don't have swelling issues or any noticeable ones.

I honestly wouldn't do this. I just negate the whole problem.

I wouldn't do it because I am lazy.

Now y'all got me wanting to pull the .270 out of mothballs and exercise it some. I don't reload, never have, and they quit makeing the amo that really shot well through that gun. I found some Hornady that shot well but it's close range effects on deer were less than desireable.

I do it to everything except my collectors stuff but they get taken apart and preserved so that if there are any issues I catch them and fix/repair before anything happens.

Yep, that's a good idea. I was young when it happenned and didn't know about any of that stuff at the time. The inside of the stock was just raw wood.

labor of love though. Im more likely to krylon my guns then to do that to a stock.

Because nothing looks better than worn krylon on a 3k ar lol

.270 is a nasty cartridge. I don't think I've ever seen a good load that will do well at less than 200 it's just moving too fast. Maybe if you can just find some round nose soft tip lead cheap stuff that doesn't have the velocity that the "hunting" rounds do would work good. I know the cheap PPU soft point lead 8mm stuff is perfect in my 8mm at 100. Well not perfect but the expansion and terminal ballistics stops them dead in their tracks. The wound channel is a little more than I'd like but it is an 8mm

I just started using remington core lock 150grn soft points. It's getting about a 2" group at 100 which is all I need for deer just disappointing after knowing how well it used to shoot. I'm using the federal powershock 150's in the browning and that bitch will flat shoot. Last time I sighted it in it was cutting holes at 200 out of a lead sled, not because i can shoot that well

I learned that from taking my old guns apart they had so much gun oil on them from cleaning and what not the water would bead up. I can't take credit for that idea it cam by happenstance. I like using a beeswax/linseed oil mix for my finishing just very light as to not make it greasy feeling.

Yeah I hate going through the ammo finding process it's so damn expensive and I know if I got into reloading I'd be such an anal SOB about getting every last drop of performance out of my rnd. that it wouldn't be cost effective with all the R&D I'd end up doing lol

That's what I did after i stripped it I wiped it down with several coats of linseed oil. It doesn't look as good as it did when new but it works

Concerning rifles it has just never been that super important to me. As long as the rifle shot accurately enough for clean ethical kill shots I was good. Now if you want to talk archery oh i was an anal prick when it came to that.
