So I’m at the dealer right now with a closed service department. I have 2017 with 33k miles. While merging from one highway to another I the transmission acted up and power just stalled out. Put my foot down and it just stuck at 3k rpms. I get off the first exit and it stalls. I was able to coast into a parking lot and restart the truck. Now the dealer happens to be 2 blocks away and the truck struggled to get there, misfiring a lot right before the driveway. I make it in and again it stalls this time with a hot trans message. Try to restart but it just misfires and stalls before I can get moving. So I have talked to someone and have the truck staying until Monday to get in the shop. Has anyone heard of any similar problems?

What year is your Taco? If it's a 2016, or early 2017, The CPS/CKP issue is known to make taco's stall and give transmission warnings.

Agreed, those are classic Crank Position Sensor symptoms. Could be any number of things though, but hey - your truck is under warranty and in the right hands.

That sounds reasonable. I have been getting bad gas mileage the past couple days, besides that everything seemed normal.

Please remain calm, It does not seem like a major or transmission failure.

But it does sound like a CPS failure which is but a 10 minute replacement. However, it may take all day for TOYOTA to diagnose and approve the replacement, as they will check the fuel quality among a dozen other possibilities.

No worries, they should provide you with a loaner

    Good luck!

This was really bad timing, service is closed and no loaner till they diagnose it.

If it is the CPS it should be covered by the recall that Toyota did for around 32,000 2016/2017’s.

Thankful you were close to the dealer and able to make it there without a tow. Could have been off road wheeling, dead truck, and out of warranty. :amen:

So nothing was found and I have the truck back. We’ll see if it acts up again.

When and where was your truck manufactured? Mine was a 17, Aug 16 build from Baja and while the recall for stalling didn't cover my truck I absolutely had a failing CPS/CKP sensor... But I'm OCD and was watching the live data and could diagnose it before it went into full on limp mode. $100 part and 5 min swap. If your truck was built in the spring of 17 though likely the new sensor design was in use so this wouldn't (likely) be your issue

I really don't understand why they can't service the vehicle with the codes given. 100% guarantee it will fail again. It blows my mind that they can see it failed, why it failed, and know what causes these failures, yet need to see it fail on their own time.

I would not be making any friends on my return trip.

I picked the truck up early January 2017 and it’s Mexico built. I may buy the sensor myself just to feel a little more comfortable driving it everyday.

yep.. wife convinced me to buy the extended warranty and I always regret it. I always end up fixing my own vehicles anyways because of situations like these that make no sense.

Don't have access to the SM at work... could someone look those codes up?

You can cancel the warranty. They will pro rate the remaining time/money back to you or the loan holder.

    Definitely do that.

In your position, I’d also let the service manager know that clearing the codes does not fix the problem and that you’re unhappy with the solution offered to you. Typically there’s a customer satisfaction email that goes out after a dealership visit. That is your best tool, provided you’re both respectful and make your expectations clear.

Also, didn’t the old and new CPS have different part numbers? Can OP pull his to see if it’s the older version?
