So im thinking of putting a 350 in my tacoma

i know it will be a pain ion the ass to do but it can be done i've seen it with an S10 my shop teacher did as a project. But i have no idea where to get the right brackets and since its summer tim emy shop teacher isnt at the school and come september i am no longer a student. any one have any ideas where to get the brackets??

 

Yota Tech seems to have several threads relating to this. Once you do it however, is passing emissions inspection important to you?

The concensus I have seen is a 4.3 Chevy V6 (essentially a Chevy 350 with two cylinders removed) is a much easier swap.

there is a company that makes a bell housing to mate a 350 to a toyota five speed transmission but it is almost $2000
i think a 4.3 vortec is the best because you can find cheap transmissions and they get great gas mileage much less the added horsepower

 

I don't know about the rest of you, but if I'm doing an engine swap in my Tacoma, I'm putting the biggest diesel motor I can find in there.

 

I'm concerned that if the motor mounts and the location of your shop teacher are your current biggest concerns, you're in waaaaaaay over your head for this project without some serious help and truck downtime. I wish you the best of luck because I'd love to see the write-up on the project. If you do it, make sure to take tons of pics and notes and you'll be a hero.

i have wanted to put a bigger motor in my yota since before i got it but that will have to wait until i improve my welding skills and i have more money and a second vehicle. i agree with goin with the diesel. if i am correct ford makes a 7.2 diesel but i doubt that will fit in the engine bay

 

Bigger motor without bigger drivetrain is a waste of time and asking for early drivetrain breakage.

Replacing the motor and drivetrain opens up the can of worms of "is it a Tacoma any more?"

Why do people purchase Tacomas when they actually want F-350s or Camaros?

 

I saw this v8 Taco at the 2008 Heat wave car show. I don't know anything about it but it could be some motivation to start the project.
Like the others have said, it will be costly if you have to pay someone to do most of the work. Make sure you know what you are going because you can make some big mistakes if you dont.

 

I enjoy doing projects like this, and creating something that no one else has.

 

Go for it. Just don't complain to anyone when a monster engine twists your diffs apart.

 

The 4.6L/4.7L Toyota engines (or something else with equivalent power ratings) is about as big as I see the rest of the truck going...those engines produce supercharged V6 numbers, so we know the truck can take it. And of course, they would do so NA, without all the disadvantages you get along with FI.

The extra torque would be nice for towing and wheeling. The Taco is well enough powered as it is with the V6, but I would've shelled out 2 or so grand more for a V8 powered option.

As for swapping anything higher than about 315 hp/tq into the Taco, fuck, at that point just weld the rear end and make it a track truck and accept that you're going to have to replace the diff ever so often.

 

Early model S-10's had an optional v8. I guess it was 25 years ago but there was a guy around town with a hilux that had a small block chevy v8 in it. it had Toy-let on the tailgate. I'm not sure why, but it can be done

 

u r better off finding an older toyota pick up and doing this mod! I have seen it done many times!
