Lifespan will depend on a number of issues. First off do the routine maintenance. That way you can expect the engine and other parts to last as long as the body. The body will depend on the environment and the steps taken to defend the body from the environment. If you live in Arizona, you will probably get sick of the car before it dies. Here in New Hampshire the body + stuff rots away long before the engine and stuff gives out.

I have a 4 cyl SR5 and can truly say that it has been way better than the 3.0L V6 Ranger (2001 model) I had. Perhaps the Ford 3.0L was a real crap dawg so take my assessment for what it's worth LOL.

Hopefully awhile, I don't really want to purchase another vehicle until 2028.

My ‘05 I bought brand new. Drove it, and worked it hard for 13 years and 532,000 km. Did all the maintenance. Recorded it in the book in the glovebox. Had to add pages to it.

It stranded me one time a few weeks ago when the alternator cable to the fuse box corroded and broke. It was a $50 fix that I should have done when I changed the alternator. I’m not a mechanic but I can re and re. I bought an ‘18 and got a very good trade in value for my old truck.

Had my 07 Gen 2 (Prerunner SR5) for 10 years and about 250K before I traded it in for my new 2017. It was *MINT* - nothing wrong with it at all. It was an access cab and I needed a Double Cab for the kids or I would have kept it. Got $8500 for it at the dealer. They slapped a 12K sticker on it and it sold in 3 days. It was a manual - thought it would be hard to sell. I see it driving around all the time where I live.... go figure.

I wouldn't worry about the Gen 3. I've got 37K on my 2017 now and it's been fine.

Just sold my 2000 4Runner w 250k. Was running great except tranny was just starting to go. Sad to sell it but very happy w the 2018 MGM DCSB. hoping to get well over 250 on it. Just follow Toyota’s maintenance schedule (or better) and keep it Protected (cleaned) from road salt. It will last a long time.

3rd gen v6 engine can be found in multiple different Toyota's and Lexus cars too. It's found to be really reliable no doubt. I only question the clunky transmission. Sometimes I regret buying an automatic on a 3rd Gen. 2nd Gen and Fj Cruiser was my favorite engine and tranny. Overall, I have no issues so far. Knock on wood.

Im interested to see how the 16+ hold up. I see alot of testimonials in here but most are pre MY 16 which is talking about what is already proven. Havent seen any 400,000 miles plus reported as of yet for 16 and beyond but hopefully they have the same results and meet expectations.

I expect these trucks will be another good representative of Toyota, reliable and dependable for a long time. Sure, some like me got a near-lemon truck, but crap happens and you move on. I’ll get another Tacoma one day but for now I enjoy my runner.

    Honest question:

If you hadn’t got a lemon would you rather be back in a Taco? Do you miss having the bed?

My 2017 TRD access cab is my third Tacoma that I have owned over the years. The two Tacoma prior were a 96 and 2007,both of those trucks had over 230,000 miles on them before I sold them. The mileage was a combination of highway, beach, fire roads, high sierra trails, etc with lots of camping, surfing, skiing gear. Lots of home remodeling, landscaping, and various odds and ends thrown in bed.
Regular maintenance and the occasional wash and no problems. I expect the same out of my 2017.

There is another thread for that question. The Tacoma versus 4Runner question comes up frequently.

This. Massachusetts is not ideal for body integrity.

My 2010 has 92K now, got it with 6500 in 2012. My plan is to hit 200k at least..here's hoping

I also sold my 2002 Tacoma (my avatar pic) with almost 300k miles to buy my 2017, but I think our 3rd gens will not last as long as the older models due to the electronics failing and their sensitive parts becomming outdated. Seriously, just look at how many small guage sensor wires are exposed to the elements and rodents in the engine bay and all over the bottom of the truck. The mechanical parts will outlast all of those.

I think the Tacoma will outlast it's TSS system. IOW I think the TSS Wil be the first thing to fail on all Toyotas that are equipped with it.

Toyota Tacoma's reliability rating have taken a nose dive since the introduction of the 3rd Gen. The 2018 has the lowest rating consumer reports can give.

They may last as long as a 2nd Gen its just going to cost you a lot more to keep it going.
